Without Any Remorse
August 2004
Released: 2004, Galy Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Lord of the Wasteland

Bloodshoteye is a new metalcore band from Leamington, Ontario, Canada who seem to be getting a fair bit of buzz with their debut, WITHOUT ANY REMORSE. They were just given the nod to open for Cryptopsy on their current Canadian tour, Lamb of God vocalist Randall Blythe sings on two tracks on the CD and they may be the next big name to come out of Canada. They play what they call “deathmetalcore” and vocalist JeSICKa (yep, she’s female) is able to get the low death growl that the fellas can. There are loads of chugging riffs and the instruments seem well mixed in the scheme of things. Eve without the appearance of Blythe, Bloodshoteye’s music is reminiscent of Lamb of God, Chimaira, etc.. Not original by any means, but heavy as hell and ready to get the pits swirling.

Right from the get-go, JeSICKa’s vocals are a bit shocking. Her photo on the back of the CD looks like this innocent little thing, but once she opens her mouth and that devilish roar hits you, you realize she means business. The lyrics are written almost entirely by her and let me tell you, she is one pissed off chick (“I’m in control I have the power/To make your life a living hell/Or fuck your soul, fuck it to death”)! Just because she is female, don’t write this band off as Kittie wannabes or a novelty act; they have the goods. “Death’s Sweet Revenge” is a perfect opener as it captures the band in all its glory. Brutal vocals, chugging riffs and an excellent groove. Blythe appears on “F.U.B.A.R.” and “Bad Trip” lending his vocals to short passages that complement JeSICKa’s roar. “Bad Trip” is the better of the two and features thrashy breakdowns and a brutal performance from both vocalists. The riff that opens “Drug Driven Insane” is a downtuned beauty and builds to a headbanging onslaught of metal madness, while the double bass in “Pieces” will shake your innards. The title track is an eight minute monster that closes the CD and it showcases that this band isn’t just a one-trick pony. There are clean vocal parts, an acoustic guitar intro and, of course, the requisite heaviness, as well.

Hopefully the fact that Bloodshoteye isn’t on a big label like Century Media and that they are Canadian won’t hinder their success. This band is playing exactly the type of metalcore that many people want to hear right now and I’m hoping to catch them on tour with Cryptopsy in Vancouver because these songs should absolutely slay live. Good on Galy Records, too, for landing this band because they are definitely one to watch.
