Bruce Dickinson
TYRANNY OF SOULS
October 2005
Released: 2005, Sanctuary Rating: 3.0/5 Reviewer: Evil Rocker Wow, it has been 7 years since "Chemical Wedding"? Moreover, since "Chemical Wedding" was better than anything IRON MAIDEN has put out since 1998 I was interested in this new album. In fact, I thought that "Chemical Wedding" was a damn good album! Well, seven years have passed and some barely average IRON MAIDEN work has been doled out during this time. What would I find here? In a word: mediocrity. Clearly there are some moments when I am reminded of Dickinson's past good works. Sadly though, they are only moments. As a whole, this album just lays there with nothing particularly spectacular or noteworthy. There are some surprise exceptions including the track "Navigate the Seas of the Sun" which is a 70's styled ballad that has a nice overall sound and mix. Also, the opening track "Abduction" is pretty good (nice guitars) and could have been included on "Chemical Wedding" even with a rather la-la-la chorus. This album is OK, especially for MAIDEN and BRUCE DICKINSON fans, but it is mired in mediocrity.
