Blood Legion
Exsanguination EP
March 2009
Released: 2009, None
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Hanntu

This is a pretty good debut effort from these four metalheads from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They play a dynamic combination of Suffocation-era death metal and old-school thrash, sort of like an early midtempo version of Kreator, and is that a bit of Pantera I hear on ‘Blood Legion’?

It’s clear to see that these guys worship the old gods of death metal in their songwriting. No messing about with unnecessary melodies or progressiveness, this is straight-ahead death metal that should inspire anyone to go rob a grave in the middle of the night.

Unfortunately, the production really lets the songs down, which is hardly surprising considering the amount of fuck-ups the boys had to endure in the studio. Jai their guitarist was unhappy with their guitar sound from the start, and the studio even contrived to lose some of the master tracks, forcing them to hurriedly rerecord some parts again. Much of the aggression and in-your-face brutality that should be inherent in the guitar sound is lost thanks to the studio, and the inconsistency in clarity, tone, level and sound between ‘Seven’, their first song, and ‘M.M.F.H.’ the last song is pretty evident.

That being said, I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in South East Asian death metal, and with rumours of Blood Legion sharing a split with an as-yet-unknown band (which will allow them to re-record and re-master their songs, hopefully in a better studio), this is a band to keep an eye out for.
