Blinded Colony
Bedtime Prayers
June 2007
Released: 2007, Pivotal Recordings
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Blinded Colony is a new name to many metalheads, I’m sure (hell, they’re not even in the mighty Metal Archives!), but the band has been around for quite some time now, releasing their first e.p. in 2000. Since that time they’ve put out two other E.P.s and one full-length, DIVINE.

As this was my first time hearing the band, I had no idea what to expect. Although, something about the fact that they used to be on Scarlet Records made me think they might fall into melodic death metal, or perhaps metalcore. Well, after listening to BEDTIME PRAYERS (terrible title, guys) I can safely say that Blinded Colony have split the difference of those two genres and gone down the same path as Soilwork on their last couple of albums. Yep, if you’ve heard that band’s FIGURE NUMBER FIVE and STABBING THE DRAMA, then you’ve got a very good idea of what Blinded Colony are up to.

Naturally, the band is quite adept at pulling off this stuff, with all the screamed verses and cleanly sung choruses, melodic guitar solos, and catchy chugging riffery. They’re Swedish, so of course they’re proficient! However, much like another review of mine this month, Fear My Thoughts’ VULCANUS, I can’t shake the general malaise that comes over me when listening to this album. There just isn’t anything here that I haven’t heard before, most of it done better several years ago.

So once again, we have a perfectly good band writing catchy songs that by all rights should be more appreciated by me than they are. Oh well, I’ll get over it. As usual, big fans of this stuff can easily add a full point to my score and go from there.
