Barren Earth are being hailed as some sort of Finnish metal supergroup, and you can kind of see where that comes from. Two ex-members of Amorphis, the current vocalist of Swallow the Sun, the drummer for Moonsorrow and one of their live/session members, and Sami Yli-Sirniö of Kreator make up Barren Earth – hardly a lineup to be sniffed at. And best of all, OUR TWILIGHT is a good portent of what’s to come.
Musically, they sound pretty close to Paradise Lost-type gothic doom, and the Swallow the Sun similarities can most easily be heard in Mikko Kotamäki’s distinct death growls. The songs on OUR TWILIGHT also share a lot of the same ambitious structures that Swallow the Sun and Amorphis are known for, while the ethereal and gloomy guitar playing is so reminiscent of, goshdarnit, Swallow the Sun and bands like Sentenced, bringing a darkness and melancholy that only the Finns can do effectively. The howling outro guitar solo on the 7-minute long ‘Floodred’, together with its wandering bass and very slightly bluesy piano interlude are definite highlights on this 4-song EP.
OUR TWILIGHT promises much of what we can expect from this band, and if people’s expectations are slightly higher than normal because of the sheer quality and calibre of the personnel behind this band, well, so be it. I’m confident that they can deliver, so this is one for the doom-and-gloom merchants to look out for!
