Blind Guardian
June 2006
Released: 2006, Nuclear Blast/Sound Pollution
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

It’s been quiet at the Blind Guardian camp for a while now. Their last studio album, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, came out in 2002 and after that they released a live CD and a live DVD. The guys been busy during this long silence, though, and have found both a new record label and a new drummer.

There are three tracks on this CDS but my promo copy only enhances one which is the track “Fly”. Even though the guys have rested for a while, that doesn’t mean they have changed their concept at all. Instead, they are continuing down the path of symphonic progressive metal that they have walked so many times in the past. It all sounds epic and majestic, and above all of it floats Hansi Kursch with his characteristic voice.

Mr. Kursch and Mr. Olbrich have written the material together and it sounds like what I had expected. “Fly” feels like a perfect choice as the first single off of the album and even though I’m not a big fan of Blind Guardian I enjoy it. The only thing that’s a little annoying for me, as a person who thinks a man should sing like a man, is Mr. Kursch’s persistence to pitch every note as high as possible.

Once again they’ve worked with long time companion Charlie Bauerfield, who has mastered the art of production within the frame of the Blind Guardian sound. This is a good but standard release by Blind Guardian that ought to appeal both major and minor fans of the band.
