Bless the Child
Unveiling Retribution
December 2011
Released: 2011, Self Released
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

Bless the Child are a six-piece from central Ohio, currently rockin’ a special blend of deathcore inspired melodic death metal on their self-released debut UNVEILING RETRIBUTION. Set genre tags aside for a moment and hear me out when I say that the album’s really damn good. The album sounds closer to older All Shall Perish than Rose Funeral, meaning it’s light on the breakdowns and heavy on tight riffs and. And that’s what makes this record so good – riffs, riffs, and more riffs.

Now any new jack on the block can stuff a crapload of riffs into a tune and try to pass it off as “complex” or “thought provoking,” but we all know that’s garbage. And so does Bless the Child, because each of the 9 tracks on UNVEILING RETRIBUTION (not including the “Intro”) are well thought out, aggressively structured, and executed with an exciting level of precision for a band that’s only a few years old. Each tune embraces a variety of melody driven riff arrangements that help to maintain the momentum built from start to finish, massaging in some harmonies and blast sprints in along the way. Easier said than done, but it makes for an entirely listenable and enjoyable experience. Particular standouts are “She is Ruin,” “As We Destroy the Dreamers,” and the brutal for the sake of brutal “Terrorizer.”

What also aids in the album’s success is a bang-up production job. The whole affair sounds clean and slick, allowing the bite of the three guitars to sit in the foreground and really crunch. Granted that the drums sound like a typewriter and the bass is lost in the mix, overall it’s an professional sounding album. Vocally, Brian Jones does a nice job of mixing up his grunts, growls, and shrieks, tailoring his delivery to the context of each tune. Collectively, the band’s performance is tighter than your date on prom night; add up all these pieces and you’ve got a great record on your hands.

UNVEILING RETRIBUTION is a mean and heavy slab of pissed off metal. And it’s available now! Check out Bless the Child’s website for more info on how to grab a copy.
