Blaze Bayley
Endure And Survive (Infinite Entanglement Part II)
June 2017
Released: 2017, Blaze Bayley Recordings
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Former Wolfsbane/Iron Maiden vocalist Blaze Bayley turned a lot of heads in 2016 with his independently released solo “comeback” album, INFINITE ENTANGLEMENT. It was Bayley’s first solo record since 2012 and was a tour de force of pure heavy metal. On top of that, it was the beginning of a science fiction-based lyrical trilogy, focused on the character of William Black. A mere one year later, and Blaze has toured the world and still found time to record and released the second part of the trilogy: ENDURE AND SURVIVE.

It’s a sequel in all ways: the band is the same, the lyrics follow on from the first album, and continues down the musical path of PART I – which is to say that if you enjoyed the emotional, pounding heavy metal of the first album, you will be right at home with ENDURE AND SURVIVE. Blaze’s song writing craft has improved immeasurably over the years, making this album a concise head bang from start to finish. As before, the music is enriched with a variety of tempos, acoustics, and atmospheric spoken word bits, but at its core, Blaze wants you to rock out with him (see: “Fight Back”). Vocally, Blaze remains at the top of his game, using his lows and highs effectively throughout the album.

Lyrically, ENDURE AND SURVIVE picks up the cliff hanger ending of the first album and carries it forward with all the requisite twists and turns you might expect from a space opera. Without giving away too much, we learn that William Black is not exactly an angel and goes through some very traumatic experiences. I can’t wait to hear how it ends.

In his review of INFINITE ENTANGLEMENT, JP noted that it contained some of the best music Bayley has ever done. I agree with that assessment and would say that with ENDURE AND SURVIVE, Blaze has even further cemented his legacy as a solo performer with yet another fantastic album.
