Concept albums are something I’ve always found quite interesting but I never expected to find them in the world of raw black metal. They’re something more open to the theatrics of stage show bands like Cradle of Filth or Dimmu Borgir. But hailing all the way from Spain, raw outfit Balmog proved us quite wrong with this EP released all the way back in 2010.
NECROANGELS’ REVELATIONS follows the revelations of a satanic ritual calling for the angels of the underworld to come and reign the impending doom upon their Christian homeland. It is no surprise such a band has come from a nation with such a pro Christian culture and history. And this EP is worth owning if you’re into raw black metal that focuses on contrasting the band’s religious backgrounds.
‘First Revelation’ has all the gallops expected of a good blast beat and riffs that would fit into a thrash metal demo and later began to make me picture American outfit Disfigurement if they ditched their death metal sound and went full on black.
‘Second Revelation’ continues the ritual concept with amazing tremolo pickings that would gain a well deserved nod from Satyricon and the like. It’s brutal and symbolises the summoning reaching its peak. Final track ‘Final Revelation’ slows things down a notch but retains the anguish and violence Balmog have delivered at the beginning.
This is an EP you don’t want to miss out on if you want to prove just how strong the Spanish black metal scene is at this moment.
