Blood God
Blood Is My Trademark
October 2014
Released: 2014, Massacre Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Erich

Blood God is the offshoot project of the German death metal band Debauchery. The band takes its name from the lead-off track on Debauchery’s 2004 album RAGE OF THE BLOODBEAST. BLOOD IS MY TRADEMARK is the band’s second album, following 2012’s NO BRAIN BUT BALLS. Yes it is all tongue-in-cheek image wise, but you would be forgiven if you completely dismissed the band after catching the video to first album single "Slaughterman" The band likes to cover itself in blood and parade half naked chicks on stage, yet the image could not possibly prepare you for the music, which is completely different than what would be expected.

Essentially, Blood God can easily be summed up as a German version of AC/DC with generous portions of Accept thrown in. That might at first seem dismissive but it is not, because the execution is nearly spot-on. Simply put, Blood God writes catchy songs that are pure metallic crunch. “Warhordes From The Underworld” is a foot-stomping tune that captures the best of AC/DC and Accept with some elements of Priest thrown in. The band comes clean in their love for Priest, Accept, and Krokus and enlists Pink Cream 69 bassist Dennis Ward to produce the album. This love comes across in the delivery and catchiness of the songs, which manage to resonate despite this all being ground that is well tread.

It is hard to find fault with fun, party songs like “Sexy Music For Sexy People” which should immediately be chased by Jackyl’s “The Lumberjack”. The title track is pure AC/DC, equal parts tribute and plagiarism but so be it. The rhythm and pumping bass on the album are definite highlights, each tune locked in like a runaway truck smashing through a barricade. Thomas Gurrath aka Mr. Debauchery’s vocals are perfect for the music, leaning towards a more pinched and higher ranged Udo. The guitar work is rhythmic though not technical, more concerned with creating a solid foundation than wowing the audience.

Naturally, Blood God’s strengths are also its weakness, the songs eventually blending together into one AC/DC song too many. So, for some humorous variety the band has included a bonus CD with “Debauchery death metal monster voice” on each song in place of the Brian Johnson/Udo style on the first disc. Ultimately, it’s all good fun delivered with sage knowledge of this style of music. BLOOD IS MY TRADEMARK will not win any awards for originality, but you get the feeling the band does not give a damn. The album succeeds wildly though in getting the party started, Blood God being a drinking’s man metal band if there ever was one.
