Order of Chaos
May 2015
Released: 2015, Hecatombe Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

What's that I hear you cry? 'Another up and coming trash band hailing from Brazil?' Well, when it's as thoroughly impressive a debut release as ''Order of Chaos'' from three-piece Blackning, in my mind there's always a little more room on the roster. Currently making a name for themselves with several festival dates back home and hoping to soon make the surge into Europe, Blackning are a band that will no doubt soon be rising to the mainstream.

Three words immediately spring to mind when trying to sum up first impressions on this one – fast, heavy and aggressive, and it comes at you like an iron-clad, axe-wielding beast that's just been told the vegetarian option is the only thing left on the lunch menu.

The opening guitar phrase on track one is a misleading thing of subtlety and beauty and is immediately ripped to shreds within a minute, which is probably along a similar vein to what would happen if the uninitiated end up at the front of the crowd at a live show for this lot. What we are left with then could be modestly described as a bold and professional statement of intent in the form of surging blast beats and hard hitting riffs that rain down upon you, catching you off guard before you have chance to reach for your safety gear. The vocals provided by lead guitarist Cleber Orsioli remind me of King Leonidas in his early years as a front man before he turned his talents to military leadership.

While the blueprint for the band's sound is laid out for all to see early on in the album, the downside of this is that there is little on offer in terms of differentiation between the tracks on offer outside of the formulaic: relentless onslaught, splicing together 2 or 3 riffs for the verses, break-down, abrupt ending, and repeat. That's not to say it's not a satisfying listen though. The production on this record is superb and the pace it carries is controlled yet simultaneously frenetic and the high level of quality is consistent throughout.
