Clocking in at just over 100 minutes is Billy Idol’s performance for VH1’s “Storytellers” series. This DVD features several songs that were not shown on TV when it originally aired. The picture quality is really sharp and the DTS soundtrack is nice and clear and mixed very well.
Song wise all the major hits are there from “White Wedding” to “Cradle of Love” with a little twist to keep it all interesting. For the most part the songs are done totally acoustic but done in such a way that they are true to the originals which all know and love. 15 tracks are featured here and Billy talks about each one before they play it which is pretty cool. You actually get to find out what he was thinking and what sort of frame of mind he was in at that particular time. It’s a more personal performance which gives you a better appreciation for the music. Granted, there is no mind-blowing guitar work from Steve Stevens here but he does do an excellent job for playing an acoustic guitar.
I always liked his stuff but never realized that he had so many great tunes, and how great they sound when done in this fashion. If you like his music then get this DVD. If you like good fun RnR then buy it. Avoid this show only if you absolutely despise acoustic guitar and Idol’s music. My small complaints about this set is that it is expensive to buy and not too readily available. The other thing is that while it is a decent collection I have a feeling it won’t get many spins in the DVD player for some reason. Only time will tell.
