Bad Karma
Point A
December 2005
Released: 2005, 3Sum/Triple Moon Records
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: Rick

I have been watching the progression of this band since they released their debut disc, BITTER PILLS, in 2001. Bad Karma are one of those bands that blur the edges of metal with tons of influences thrown in. On BITTER PILLS I noted that they played with a loose punkish vibe but had hoped that they would head in a more metal direction with their next release. That wasn’t the case as their next disc, SICK BURLESQUE, left me scratching my head as the band moved in a different, more mallcore direction. I could only hope that the next CD would bring the band back to their roots with a more metal sound with their loose punk feel.

POINT A is Bad Karma’s latest release and is 13 tracks which again have the band changing their sound ever so slightly. The metal sound, which the band was cultivating on their debut has slipped even further into the background on this release. “Nowhere Fast” and “Never Come Home” are about as deeply as the band step into metal territory on this release. The latter track being one of the strongest on the CD as it a cover of a Bitch song from their “Damnation Alley” demo from 1982. The rest of the CD is more straightforward rock with some punk influences thrown in with the strongest track being “Just One Song”. This is an interesting song that makes you want to sing along and tap your feet. It almost doesn’t fit with the rest of the CD.

It seems as if Bad Karma has taken a couple of steps backward on this release. The production of the disc leaves a lot to be desired. It just seems like the whole thing was thrown together in a hurry. The liner notes say the CD was “recorded at a cheap rehearsal studio in the middle of the night”. I hope that isn’t meant to be taken literally. With 3 CDs under their belts its time that Bad Karma take a step up in the music world. They have the tools but its time to prove that they are serious about what they do.
