Conjuring The Dead
October 2014
Released: 2014, Nuclear Blast
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

Blackened Death Metal (or Deathened Black Metal) titans Belphegor have returned. These caprine obsessed Austrians deliver another hellstorm of rage and bile with "Conjuring The Dead", their tenth album.

Opener "Gasmask Terror" vomits forth from the speakers with blazing fury, and blackened intensity. It's fetid melody will linger in your brain for days! The title track follows, beginning with a somewhat cheesy sample but thankfully redeems itself with its slow burning snarl. It features a truly glorious breakdown at the song's midpoint, replete with its spectral chanting. A truly stunning track. The album thunders along with the venomous thrash attack of "In Death", and the bruising Death Metal riffery of "Rex Tremendae Majestatis" which is full of magical eastern tinged savagery. The next track, "Black Winged Torment" is a snarling beast of a track. The most brutal on the album. Wisely Belphegor follow this with and instrumental interlude, "The Eyes", full of yearning melody and wistful menace. Next up is "Legions Of Destruction", a feast of Death Metal rage. It wouldn't be Belphegor without at least one paean to carnal desire, and naturally they oblige with "Flesh, Bones And Blood", with Helmuth bellowing "Fornication!" at every chorus. The album finishes with two tracks that are quite different in tone. "Lucifer, Take Her!" is a vicious slab of satanic wickedness, whereas "Pactum In Aeturnum" is epic in tone and vast in scope.

At this stage of their career the listener knows just what they are going to get from Belhegor. They have a superb formula and have distilled their core sound to a wondrously malignant purity. Magnificus In Musica!
