Behind The Curtain
Released: 2001, Independent
Ah, the wonderful world of Dream Theater. I was thrilled when I opened up my mailbox and their new promo CD was in there. Oh, wait a second, it’s just the promo CD from a band called Behind The Curtain. Hmm. That’s strange, ‘cause it really sounds like Dream Theater.
Needless to say, BtC is a new band entering themselves into the prog-metal arena, with varying results. The music is almost strictly DT-inspired from their IMAGES & WORDS era. Sure, the band is competent musicians, but the music just lacks any real flare or originality. The main difference in the band’s sound is that vocalist Jonas Froberg wisely refrains from going the rout of broken glass and deafened dogs, instead remaining within a comfortable mid-range. His voice is actually quite good, in a smooth kind of way, except for the occasions (parts of “Chosen”) where he sounds like the guy from the BareNaked Ladies(!).
All in all, this is a decent effort that shows a young band with promise, but ultimately lacks the personal stamp that the band will need to succeed. Keep at it guys, and your time will come.
