The Dawn of Enlightenment
March 2008
Released: 2007, Self released
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Hanntu

This is Armory’s second shot at recording this album. They recorded THE DAWN OF ENLIGHTENMENT in 2003/2004, but decided that they weren’t happy with it, and they re-recorded it professionally again in 2007. One wonders if they might have better spent that time writing a new album, but I’m not complaining – this album is a tour de force of power metal in 2008.

Ahhhh, this is an orgasm of pure soaring melodies. It’s time to raise your fists in the air for the glory of METAAALLLLLLL!!!! This band from Massachusetts makes no attempt to hide their musical influences. You can almost hear each separate influence in different parts of each song. Think Iron Maiden, Manowar, Hammerfall, Edguy and Dragonforce, just to throw a few names out there. Singer Adam Kurland alternately sounds like Ralf Scheepers (2/10 – his falsetto is pretty ughh), ZP (7/10) with a smidgen of Bruce Dickinson (“Forever Triumphant”), Tobi Sammett (9/10) and Eric Adams. This is a wonderful album of singalong choruses and headbanging thrashing, epic and grand. Ahhh…Throw in a cover of Maiden’s “Flight of Icarus”, and what else do you need. Air guitar, guaranteed.

What’s the cheese factor, as I’m sure many of you are anxious to know. Well, it’s a magnificent 10, and you know what, I don’t care. I can just see these songs played live, and I can just see myself having a fucking good time with a beer in one hand and a sword in the other. If you’re a fan of the abovementioned bands, or you’ve recently lost your faith in the power metal genre, pick this album up. It’s not going to change many minds about power metal – oh the gayness, shock, horror. But it sure revived my flagging interest in the hitherto limp-dicked power metal of the past few years. It sure as hell kicks Avantasia’s new album in its non-existent balls.

If you live in the MA area, check them out as I understand they’re doing a lot of local shows. The rest of you, buy the album. You won’t regret it.
