Assjack is labelled as a Death Metal band according to their press release. Sounds a bit strange coming from the grandson of Country music legend Hank Williams and the son of Hank Jr. Well for anyone who is familiar with Hank III then this isn’t too far fetched. His past couple of Hank III releases have had borderline Metal material on them and he has also played bass in Superjoint Ritual with former Pantera singer Phil Anselmo. How’s that for bridging the gaps between Metal and Country?
The music on this debut is somewhat typical for the genre and is nothing out of the ordinary. Hank sings and plays all the instruments on here making it a true ‘solo’ disc despite it being labelled as such. The insanely fast drumming is one aspect that stands out here. While there is nothing intricate or complicated about the playing it is just upfront and over the top fast. For the most part it tends to bury the guitars and the bass is hardly even heard. Hank’s voice on here is your typical ‘growl’ and nothing like what we are used to from him.
This is for fans of more extreme music and for Hank III completists. For those of us that enjoyed Hank’s last couple of releases like DAMN RIGHT,REBEL PROUD and STRAIGHT TO HELL may want to avoid this one.
