Atreyu
Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses
June 2002
Released: 2002, Victory Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Pete

Atreyu stand apart from any of the other bands of the hardcore/metal genre that I've heard, as they use two vocalists. Lead throat, Alex Varkatzas, handles the agression side of the fence while drummer Brandon Saller offers up a melodic approach...and you know what? It works.

From the metal-tinged opener "A Song for the Optimists", the straight-ahead hardcore of "Living Each Day Like You're Already Dead" or the melodic "Aint Life Grand", Orange County's Atreyu have a diversity which you don't find among even today's hardcore/metal standards (if there is such a thing?. SUICIDE NOTES AND BUTTERFLY KISSES will appease any hardcore fan yet may even spark a bit of curiousity in the metal community.
