Den Forstefodd
September 2017
Released: 2017, Folter
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: John Haseltine

Arckanum is a one-man black metal band hailing from Sweden. I must admit here that when I first saw that, I had a preconceived notion I was probably not going to like it. Picky as I am with any black metal, most of the one-man experiences or two even, usually come off as a bunch of blast beats with horrible timing and one cord being blasted like a 14 year old boy under the covers with his first nudey magazine.

DEN FORSTFODDE is a bit more than that. There is more of a structure to it. Many of the tracks tend to come off as a journey into some darkened land of enchantment. I have not a clue as to the journey as it seems to be sung in his native tongue, that of which I do not understand. But for those of you who do, kudos. Again, to be quite honest, I couldn’t really tell for the most part.

I have actually enjoyed listening to this several times and will probably leave it on the thumb drive in the car. It is a very atmospheric / Avant Gard style of black metal of which I have not heard in a long while. It may be a genre to look a bit more into.

If you are not serious about your black metal, you may not enjoy this one. I give it 3.0 out of 5.0 simply for the fact that it caught my attention. And to me comes off just original sounding enough that there is a creativity factor there that any reviewer cannot take away from any artist. Like it or not.
