Assaulter
Boundless!
April 2011
Released: 2011, Metal Blade Records
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: Demonator

It's kind of funny really - it was only just last month that saw me waxing lyrical on these very pages about the tsunami of underground talent washing in from Australia when Assaulter's latest landed on my desk. Having kicked around since 2004 and hailing from the same sunny peninsula as Destroyer 666 (whose S Bezerker handles vocal, bass and guitar duties here), BOUNDLESS! is the band's sophomore release and if it's anything to go by, they may want to consider pouring all their efforts into their day-jobs from now on.

Sounding ironically like a poor man's Destroyer 666, it's worth mentioning from the off that Assaulter aren't exactly bereft of good ideas. Quite the contrary in fact - the riffing on the likes of "Outshine" and "The Perpetual War" are as pointed and devastatingly on target as any you've snapped your neck to albums like UNCHAIN THE WOLVES. The trouble here is in the execution. Perhaps there was a subconscious easing of intensity levels given that this is a essentially little more than a fuck-about for its membership - Bezerker certainly sounds nothing like the primeval colossus he cuts in Destroyer 666. You could also point to the shoddy production, where apparently "purposefully primitive" was mistaken for demo-grade.

Either way, Assaulter amounts to significantly less than the sum of it's parts. For every good riff, you can be rest assured that you've got a hefty slice of filler coming your way; the sort of bush league nonsense that's well beneath men of this talent.
