Sometimes constant line-up changes can really diminish the consistency in song-writing in a band. Aborted has suffered from this condition. After the first couple of albums the band has never had the same line-up twice in a row and on occasion a complete overhaul. This has resulted in, not necessarily a lack of quality, but constant changes in sound and style. RETROGORE is the bands 9th album and has (almost) the same line-up as THE NECROTIC MANIFESTO from 2014 and it shows.

The most immediate positive point is that Aborted have returned to a more old school Brutal Death Metal delivery on this album. Another appealing feature is they have also returned to a traditional gore-based lyrical thrust and image. Hence the title, RETROGORE. Even the cover looks more I’m glad for this because after THE ARCHAIC ABBATOIR I didn’t like the sleek modern direction the band went in. Not bad albums by any means but I prefer their brutal Death Metal to their tech-death styling’s. There is even some nice bits of narration and samples taking us back to the good old days when Death Metal bands would regularly sample in obscure bits from old horror movies.

The production is loud and upfront and the guitar tone raw and buzzing. Sven vocals sound as guttural as ever and everything is a bit slower perhaps and more in the pocket with occasional bursts of speed. There is even some quite melodic soloing like the solo on ‘Coven Of Ignorance’. The songs are a little longer, just a bit and have a bit more compositional sophistication instead of just pure 2-3 minute blasts like the last few albums.

I’ve always enjoyed Aborted, always have and likely always will, but RETROGORE is the first album that has got me excited about the band in a while. A fine return to the grave.
