Arsyn
Degeneration
October 2000
Released: 2000, RSE
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Rick

"Heavy metal, hard rock, industrial thrash or a pre-apocalyptic doomsday machine". That is how the band Arsyn describes itself. Hailing from Southern California these 4 guys are out to set the metal world on fire with a potent blend of metal, hard rock and industrial tinged thrash. The members of Arsyn are Alan Johnson: drums, Brett Corse: guitars, Bob Gates: bass and Colin Whalen on vocals with special guest Teddy "Zig Zag" Andreas (Guns n' Roses) on the harmonica. Degeneration is the bands first full length CD and is produced by Patrik Regan, Lanny Cordola (House of Lords) and Chuck Wright (House of Lords, Quiet Riot). The release consists of 11 songs; 9 originals and 2 re-mixed tracks clocking in at just about 40 minutes.

"Kill Joy" kicks of the disc with a groovy industrial tinged pounder that will instantly have your head banging. "Blind Fury" continues on in an even more industrial direction. They turn up the thrash quotient on this track which makes this one of the CD’s heaviest songs. The tone things down with "Psycho Super Society". This is a mid paced track that leans more in the hard rock direction and is probably the best track on the CD. " Exist and Die" bounces along with lots of keyboard, whistles and effects added which augment a straight forward traditional metal track. The longest song on the disc clocks in at just 4:07 and is titled "Silent Screams". Again this is another straight forward metal track with some distorted vocals which make it a contender for best track on the disc, right up there with "Psycho Super Society". "Succubus Blues" is a very bluesy track which is helped greatly by the harmonica of Zig Zag Andreas. A departure from the other songs on the CD but a very good tune.

Take away the distorted vocals and industrial trappings and Degeneration is just a straight forward metal disc. At times the added noises take away from the good music that Arsyn is creating. Most of the songs clock in at under 4 minutes so it would have been nice to se a few that pushed the tune a bit farther. I could have also done without the remixed versions of the tracks "Kill Joy" and "Blind Fury". They have no point at all on this CD. Overall though, Arsyn are creating an interesting concoction of metal and industrial. Underneath their slight industrial side is a traditional metal sound that is sure to gain them more than a few fans. Check them out at http://www.arsyn.com
