Arthemis
Live From Hell
July 2014
Released: 2014, Off Yer Rocka Recordings
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Italy’s Arthemis is a band that has gone surprisingly unnoticed in the annals of Metal Rules. Although we do have a review of the band’s last album, WE FIGHT available, that’s it. That’s a definite shame for a band that has been around for more than 10 years and has 7 full-length album releases to their credit. With that in mind, here is a little history on the band:

They share a long history with now-defunct British power metal act Power Quest. Arthemis leader Andrea Martongelli was a long-time guitarist in that band, appearing on three of their albums. Current drummer Francesco Tresca also appeared on a couple Power Quest albums, and ex-Arthemis vocalist Alessio Garavello sang on all but the final Power Quest album. Now focusing purely on Arthemis, Martongelli has re-vamped the entire Arthemis lineup since 2009, putting out two highly regarded albums and now this, the band’s first ever live album.

I admit I came into this album aurally blind as I’ve never heard anything by the band before. Pleasingly, Arthemis is a much different beast than Martongelli’s old band, fusing power metal elements to a thrash metal chassis that is heavier and more aggressive than I expected, while still maintaining a lot of sing-along melody (see the catchy “We Fight”).

For a live album, this is unfortunately short, at only eight songs, but it does capture the band’s set at HardRockHell 2013. Focusing on the band’s recent two albums (the aforementioned WE FIGHT, and 2010’s HEROES), the sound is clear and powerful, equally featuring all four members of the band. What’s more, these are damn good songs, not a weak one in the bunch.

If I had any complaints, they are these: One, vocalist Fabio D.’s stage banter is too typical of a heavy metal frontman, relying way too much on swearing to get a reaction. Two, I want more! I realize this was probably all the songs the band was allotted at the festival, but this is much too short a set for such an entertaining band. More, please!

After being pasted to the wall by this album, I will definitely be searching out Arthemis’ back catalogue. Fans of the band will LOVE this, and if, like me, you are new to the Arthemis family, LIVE FROM HELL is a great place to start.
