Onward To Annihilation
October 2013
Released: 2013, Deathgasm Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

Abominant is a death metal trio coming from Kentucky and bringing you all the madness and brutality you could possibly wish for in music.

When it comes to writing music and performing, Abominant are no beginners, as they’ve been in the business of death metal for over two decades. Their latest record Onward To Annihilation is their 10th studio album and it’s been released via Deathgasm Records on the 6th of August, 2013.

Opening with the very creepy and somewhat disturbing “We Are Coming,” Abominant manage to build up the excitement with the very first song on the record. It starts with monstrous and demonic growls kicking off a zombie apocalypse that matures into a ridiculously heavy, fast and, most definitely, brutal track where grindcore elements are arranged with death metal’s complexity and techniques. It manages to build up the tension and intrigue you to stick around to hear the rest of the album.

Onward To Annihilation stands out as a classic death metal record adapted just right to please the modern day listeners. It embodies all the death metal elements to make it a killer record to blow your head off. Aggressive approach, great atmospherics, fast riffs, sick blast beats and solid growls to blend with the music just right… Onward To Annihilation has it all.

Great melodic backgrounds and some rather impressive guitar work and solos will blow your mind on songs, like “Conquerors of Dust” and ““Beside The Dying Flame”. As well as that, great production and full-on death metal approach to song writing can be heard on songs, like “Battlescarred” and title track “Onward to Annihilation”.

Apart from their own material, Abominant throw is a cover version of Hypocrisy’s “Left To Rot” and add a little bit of diversity and extensiveness to the sound while still appreciating the original version and not experimenting too much with different arrangements.

“Hold Your Ground” makes a refreshing track on the album with most definite thrash metal influences and more melodic vocals, while “Legions Of Hell” wraps up the album with a great mix of aggressive blast beats, stupid fast riffs, taunting atmospherics and deepest of the death metal growls.

Onward To Annihilation is an album that any death metal fan would appreciate, as it’s an excellent piece of work both musically and technically. Make sure you check it out if you class yourself a fan of Napalm Death, Nasum, Nile, Morbid Angel, Hypocrisy, etc.
