Angelus Apatrida
The Call
August 2012
Released: 2012, Century Media
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: UK Team

From a past discography of intense and obliterating albums, Spanish quartet, renowned on delivering rich arrays of instantly recognisable riffs and vocal hooks. Latest album “The call” is no different with a colourful collective of sonically creative and diverse tracks that are set to please any modern thrash fan. The initial impressions of the new album starting with an instant array of harmonised melodies with full measures of speed and vicious crunches combined to make a savagely delightful album.

With ferocious riffs compiled into the forty five minute thrash catalyst, starting with the quick fired magnitude of “You are next” sets the album’s tone as the harmonised speed picking introducing a rich provocative flavour to the newest offering from Angelus Apatrida.

“At the gates of hell” is a slower number that delightfully boosts in gravity throughout the track with the catchy chorus. With an abrupt ending that pauses momentarily making way for the lavish “It’s rising”, Sounding like a mantle ready to explode along with quick fire “blood on the snow” sounding like a duo of bombastic tunes that are anything but filler. “Killer instinct” and “The hope is gone” are well and truly fine displays of the band in full swing of the album now filled with excitement, sing-along-able chorus lines with the same ferocity and depth that fits the stylisation of Angelus Apatrida’s sound.

Flowing into the remorseless “Fresh pleasure” which is appealing to the ear with diversity and exploration within the bands own set sound. The second to last number “Still corrupt” a song that would work perfectly as a live number with all the right pauses within its savage structure. As the albums closes on the stunning “Reborn” the slow beginning is deceptive and creates homage to the traditional thrash album last track.

The call overall has a delightful emphasis on the technicality of guitar work with sweep picking sounding like mechanically programmed precision cogs in a well oiled machine. With harmonised vocals that invigorate the components for the cauldron of creation behind the album. With high magnetism of speed within the powerhouse of drumming and catchy bass lines, all arranged and highly produced to perfection making this a sublime slice to listen too.
