Angels Of Babylon
August 2013
Released: 2013, Scarlet Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

It doesn’t seem like three years ago that I gave a very high rating to the debut album KINGDOM OF EVIL by Angels Of Babylon. I am not at all surprised that the independent band got signed immediately, based on the quality of the debut and the musicians on the album. In case you missed the low-key, indie debut, which would not surprise me, Angles of Babylon are a super-group founded by Rhino (ex-Manowar). Also on board are Steve Handel (replacing Dave Ellefson) and young super-wizard on guitar, Ethan Brosh. For the new album THUNDERGOD the band replaced one veteran vocal god (David Fefolt) with another up and coming vocal demi-god, none other than Diego Valdez of Helker. The transition is seamless and pound for pound I think Valdez is the more talented singer.

The American quintet have signed to Scarlet Records and released another 11 song, 52-minute molten masterpiece of melodic Metal. The band has truly mastered classic Metal. There are some epic songs, anthemic songs and fast powerful songs as well. The choruses are engaging with dynamic stories and lyrics. ‘White Star Line’ is yet another song written about the sinking of the Titanic but somehow they make it interesting with a descending pre-chorus line. The intros have a little bit of sonic flavour, acoustic guitar, some acoustic piano too, but mostly it is all Metal. In my first review I said I was probably over-rating the debut a touch and accordingly I’ve dropped this one to a four. It doesn’t have quite the same song-writing magic across the entire album that the debut did, but it is still a fantastic record. ‘Turning To Stone is a great heart-felt ballad and the albums ends with the fierce track ‘Bullet’. THUNDERGOD is well written with superb individual performances and it is flawlessly executed in the true Metal form.

I’m so delighted there is a constantly growing body of work in the USPM field with bands like Holy Hell, Cage, Burning Star, Death Dealer and of course, Angels Of Babylon. I’m beginning pretty much everything that Rhino touches turns to Metal gold and we owe him a debt of gratitude, especially for THUNDERGOD.
