Aborted
The Necrotic Manifesto
May 2014
Released: 2014, Century Media Records
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Metal-Rules.com UK Team

Ever have the sort of day where you just need someone to scream in your face? The sort of day where an album will help act as a cathartic release once you get home? Or do you simply fancy hearing an album that gladly rips and pulverises you in equal measures? Then you've stumbled upon the album that will do just that. Belgium's ABORTED present “The Necrotic Manifesto” and it reiterates their position as one of the forerunners of deathgrind.

Right from the off, ABORTED state their intent. Ominously opening with the densely layered orchestral “Six Feet Of Foreplay”, the sampled line of “I am pain” gives way to the chaotic “The Extirpation Agenda” and never lets up from there-on-in. The intensity on display is a major factor in what makes this album so good – it's relentless. That is not by any means meant to suggest that it is eternally grinding, because it isn't. Sure the tempo barely drops below face-ripping, but ABORTED throw in grooves, slams and mesmeric chug sections to vary the sonic attack on your ears. Examples include, “An Enumeration Of Cadavers” and closer “Cenobites” - blasting meets grinding meets grooving, and it sounds such a pleasing combination. It's only really “Die Verzweiflung” that lets the side down – a mid-tempo stomp that sounds a little at-odds with the rest of the album. That's not to say it is bad (it isn't), but it just doesn't seem to fit well with the rest of the album. But one slightly weaker song out of fourteen isn't really that detrimental as the grandeur and fury of the rest of the album is more than enough to carry it.

It has to be said then that as an entire album, “The Necrotic Manifesto” is all you could want from deathgrind. Where USA's CATTLE DECAPITATION have incorporated more melody in their music, ABORTED use groove and dissonant leads to craft a viciously dark sound. The production on the album aids this further – crisp, clean and well-balanced; each part of the drum kit is audible amongst the wall of guitars and bass, whilst Sven de Caluwé's vocals (varying from high screams to a gurgling low) take centre and stand-out well. Yet it all culminates into a very dense sound – if anyone is in need of a guide in creating a spot-on sounding mix, then look here.

If you like an album that rips through its songs at break-neck speed whilst leaving destruction behind in its wake, then “The Necrotic Manifesto” is for you. With enough variety to ensure that it isn't just mindless grind and amazing overall sound; you'd be hard-pushed to find a better use of forty-five minutes. Eight albums in, ABORTED know how to craft a devilishly heavy piece of work and that is plainly apparent here. Maniacal, dense and crushingly heavy; it is a fine piece of deathgrind.

Aborted. This is a classic death/grind metal band (--that was a statement--). THE NECROTIC MANIFESTO is the new Belgian dynamite that is gonna explode the metal world. This is the eighth time Aborted committing this ‘crime’. Proverbial showers not growers, the death vets continue winning/killing streak of their new burning death metal wheel.

This new necrotic, sick, and unholy offering is the wicked follow up to GLOBAL FLATLINE (2012). Over against to Morbid Angel’s ILLUM DIVINUM INSANUS, THE NECROTIC MANIFESTO is definitely the album that serious death metal devotees are exactly willing to give the genre’s iconic artistic much room to explore outside their repertoire. That MANIFESTO benefits from the ‘waxen’ and clear BUT not modern production skills of Jacob Hansen for one more time, who has helped infuse the new tracks with malevolent energy and sonic purity. This album continues the same themes, styles and technical wizardry as if only short time had passed between the two album. Their energy level, AS USUAL, is set to eleven, as you can hear immediately in the maniacal opening track “The Extirpation Agenda” - which is broken up into quick, complicated and dirty but catchy enough riff blocks, with the briefest of lead guitar flourishes from Danny Tunker and Mendel Bij De Leij, seriously aggressive bass from JB Van der Wal and Sven "Svencho" de Caluwé’s trademark demon roar.

There are latent and interspersed black metal elements in all the tracks of MANIFESTO, making it a true example of extreme embellishment. THE NECROTIC MANIFESTO melds atmospheric and pentatonic melodies into a maelstrom of bleak, scalpel-sharp, maximum BPM aggression and multiple stab wounds of hate-driven malcontent. There are also, extremely catchy, heavy and slow tracks like “Die Verzweiflung” making this album brilliant.

For the next 42 minutes, your existence will be plummeted into an abysmal void marred by raw, blackened ferocity and depressive auras... Dead in the Manger deliver a mixture of black metal and death-grind with a tendency for noise and ambient atmospheres as well. THE NECROTIC MANIFESTO is a nice mash-up of genres that serves as a brief but engrossing offering.
