Released: 2010, Century Media
Let's face it - when it comes to the young bucks leading the charge in thrash metal's current resurgence, genuine talent still remains a scarce commodity. For every upstart willing to push the boundary of this once-maligned sub-strain of heavy metal, there are at least five others who appear perfectly content to simply recycle the ideas of the vastly more competent stalwarts who influenced them. Not that Angelus Apatrida are spring chickens, mind you. These Spanish natives have been spreading the headbanger’s gospel for the better part of decade - largely overlooked until Century Media picked them up last year.
It's good thing they did too, because it would be criminal to let talent of this caliber go to waste. Talk about the select few innovators I eluded to a moment ago - this quintet is right up there. Their innovation is neither outlandish, nor leftfield - in fact, their collective fondness for Megadeth and Testament is particularly evident. But, across thirteen stellar tracks that include a brutal cover of Iron Maiden’s “Be Quick or Be Dead”, they dish up a heady concoction of pure thrash goodness that rarely sets a foot wrong. "Of Men and Tyrants", "The Misanthropist" and "My Insanity" are practically buckling beneath the weight of hooks so colossal and hard-hitting they sting like a Tyson left-hook. They're a thoroughly settled and confident unit are Angelus Apatrida and every member is thoroughly on-form throughout.
So effective is CLOCKWORK in fact that there's little to suggest room for improvement. Still I'm holding out for another step forward next time round. After all, this is their first opportunity to enjoy the benefits of being signed to a major underground label. Let's hope they don't keep us waiting around too long before they take advantage of Century Media’s good nature then.
