Angeles Y Demonios
The Years Of Metal
February 2017
Released: 2014, Sade Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

It’s odd how these things can work out. A member of the Mexican band Angeles Y Demonios was participating in a work-sharing project in Calgary, Canada and he worked with a friend of mine who, in turn introduced me to this band.

THE YEARS OF METAL is an independent project and they did a decent job in presenting their CD. It has a 12-page booklet, full lyrics, pictures and a decent production. Looking at the band you can tell they worship at the altar of steel. With names like Demon AD, Blackstar, Steelheart and Artillery they look and sound like they live the Metal dream.

To my ears THE YEARS OF METAL lives up to it’s title, the band play a very solid type of 80’s heavy-ish, melodic Metal maybe like heavier Motley Crue and Ratt or any number of more modern bands in the style like Wig Wam or Absolute Steel. I mention those last two bands on purpose to indicate there is a bit of a party theme laced through the album. Most of the songs are in English, which is a little rough and the lyrics on songs like ‘Fuck You’ aren’t all that sophisiticated, but that doesn’t matter too much, it’s Metal! A few songs are in their native tongue.

The 10-track, 51 minute CD leads off with a decent vocal performance from Patrick Demon AD who has a bit of a rough voice but also can hit some really awesome high notes. Steelheart shreds the fretboard into kindling and the pace is fast and furious courtesy of the rhythm section. The pace is good, the album burns along with a nice mix of slower and faster cuts, with good melodies that are memorable.

THE YEARS OF METAL is pretty obscure album but I’m glad I got a chance to check Angeles Y Demonios out. They have it what takes to break out of the local market in my opinion. Worth seeking out.
