Amenti (Catacomb Chants and Oneiric Visions)
September 2013
Released: 2013, World Terror Committee
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

It’s of no surprise to anyone either devoted to metal or just getting into their scene, that Black Metal is regarded as an ‘extreme’ genre. However what you rarely come across is a Black Metal release that jumps from one end of the ‘extreme’ spectrum to the other on almost every track. By that I am referring to Greek outfit Acherontas and their latest album Amenti (Catacomb Chants and Oneiric Visions).

The fourth studio album from the band dubbed ‘mavericks’ in the Hellenic Black Metal scene opens with the atmosphere of a Burzum record and continues to grab the listener by sounding like an early 90s Norwegian release. Track: ‘The Lamp of the Desert’ comes with tremolo picking reminiscent of early Mayhem and 1349 at times.

Vocals are standard black metal screams but what stands out most are the drums. If you’re familiar with black metal you would expect an ongoing blast beat, but that is almost invisible throughout the album. In place we have a catchy groove synchronized well with the chainsaw buzz of the guitar.

Symphonic and dark ambient pieces are also evident, especially with the addition of tribal drums and bells on ‘Divulgence of Her Sacral Temples’. ‘Wine of Blood and Pestilence’ continues the dark ambiance with spoken vocals and gloomy synthesizers. Acherontas have taken the best elements of all areas of the black metal world and lovingly married them together to bring a very deep and spine tingling tribute to the spiritualism and mysticism which surrounds their homeland.

The only downside to this release is it becomes a bit too ambient with less guitars and blast beats as you might expect from an experienced black metal outfit. However, the neatly arranged tribal instruments and gloomy spoken word lyrics hold up to justify its sixty-two minute length. Ideal music for a winter’s night in front of a roaring fire.
