Joy 4 Ever
January 2004
Released: 2003, Lion Music
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Lord of the Wasteland

Ok, stay with me here. Anand Mahangoe was born in Surinam to East Indian parents and he grew up in Holland. He was inspired at a young age to play guitar after seeing the light reflecting off of Joe Satriani’s guitar during a concert in Holland. He looks like Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave) and plays like Satriani and Steve Vai. Still with me? JOY 4 EVER is an incredible prog metal/instrumental album and I normally LOATHE this kind of music, so it means something when I say this is damn good!

The first thing I noticed were the song titles. They sound like songs a third-rate glam band would have written circa 1989!! That aside, the music is absolutely phenomenal. The opening track, “A Dirty Mind Is A…” features some incredible playing by all the musicians. You can really feel the drums and the sweeping keyboards throughout. Of course Anand’s guitar is at the forefront here but at no time does he overshadow the rest of the band. Like Dream Theater, this is a full BAND effort, not just one musician’s wankery. “Meet Mr. Long” is another killer track with some blazing guitar and bass work. “Get Laid” features former Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian and is the most thunderous track on the CD.

There is not a single vocal to be found on JOY 4 EVER but don’t let that take away from the music. This CD will appeal to many people from the prog fan, to the guitar fan, to a metal fan in general. Anand will most likely never get the fame he deserves but he’s got my testimonial.
