Anihilated
Scorched Earth Policy
July 2010
Released: 2010, Killermetal Records
Rating: 5.0/5
Reviewer: Thorsten Zwingelberg

While the difference between Trash and Thrash might seem like merely a matter of spelling to most fans and journalists, the real difference is made plain by UK’s finest Thrash Metal veterans Anihilated, who have just returned with yet another killer album. Most of modern day so-called Thrash (a.k.a. Metalcore etc.) is Trash, while “Scorched Earth Policy” is a prime example of Thrash Metal. Cutting guitar riffs, thundering drums and dominant vocals that are reminiscent of M.O.D.’s Billy Milano, are the ingredients of this full metal meal.

After the band had called it a day in the late 80ies, they returned in 2005 with a Live album. Extatic reactions both by fans and media brought the band back together and with their latest masterpiece they prove this decision correct. “Scorced Earth Society” is a fine mix of uptempo Thrashers and ten ton riff attacks that provide for a diversified Album that flashes by current releases like EXODUS’ “Exhibit B-the Human Condition”.

Coming from the Punk Rock scene, the band still deals with all sort of social and political criticism in their songs and musically you can tell that they have a Punk Rock background. However, also influences of Slayer and Bay Area Thrash shimmer through every now and then. It’s become rare that an album has more killers than fillers. But this is certainly one. While “The Burning of the Southern Cross” is one of my favs on this record, because it comes with really catchy hooklines and riffs, most of the songs stay with you a while (e.g. the fast “Until the Bitter End” or “Despair and Retribution”).

“Scorched Earth Policy” is easily the best Thrash Metal release this year and competitors will have to realize that Anihilated have set a new standard for contemporary Thrash Metal.
