American Dog
Foamin’ At The Mouth (Live)
February 2006
Released: 2005, Independent
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Rick

Shit kicking, beer drinking, whisky soaked down and dirty southern fried metal is what American Dog delivers on its latest release FOAMIN’ AT THE MOUTH LIVE. Now this writer is not a huge fan of the live CD format because if I can’t see the band why waste my time listening to them reinterpret studio material? There are however exceptions to the rule as some bands are better in the live arena because their sound can never be adequately captured in the confines of a studio. American Dog is one such act. They live on the stage and the live setting infuses their songs with the alcohol fuelled power that gives them their edge. To make this the live CD the best it could be American Dog, instead of taking the recording equipment to the club, took the club to the recording equipment. The band invited 80 of its closest friends into the studio where theband could play to its strength, performing live, yet get the best possible recoding of the songs.

“Another Lost Weekend” from their latest CD STARS N BARS opens the show and as this is one of the bands best songs it is easy to see why they would kick off the show with it. “Shitkicker”, from 2003’s RED, WHITE AND BLUE speeds things up with its simple, straight forward headbanging riff that makes me want to destroy something! The song is that infectious. The constant theme throughout American Dogs music is drinking, drinking and more drinking and the song titles are perfect evidence including “Drank To Much”, “Blame it on the Booze”, “I’ll Drink to That”, “Too Damn Sober” and “Another Lost Weekend”. “Another Lost Weekend” is notable for its great sing along chorus and crowd participation. American Dog also throw in a great surprise; a cover of Motorhead’s “Bomber” which they pull off to great effect.

American Dog delivers when it comes to hard rocking anthems. Their sound is blues based and alcohol driven. You can tell these are just some good ole boys out to have a good time. When the beer is flowing and the party has started American Dog are just the band to kick it into high gear!
