Anchor
Pain Inside
May 2001
Released: 2000, Independent
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: EvilG

Anchor proves that not all bands from Finland are melodic or power metal. However, that is not the reason why I was not too fond of this CD. The style of metal played on here is a mixture of hard rock and what I refer to as “groove” metal. Imagine a slower more rock/groove version of Machine Head/Pantera. This sounds very much like an American groove metal band and not like the typical stuff coming out of Finland. The band’s biggest drawback and the main problem I have with Anchor is the vocals. When they are sung in a gruff/heavy voice they work for me but the vocalist tries to sing “melodically” and his voice is just NOT cut out for it. It sounds more like someone talking than singing. This is very apparent on the track “Disease.” The strongest track on the CD is “Blinded Eyes.” It has a few short-lived up-tempo moments that woke me up but it’s still full of simplistic repetitive down tuned riffs. “Search” is another song that starts out good with good drumming and riffing. Again though, once the vocals come in it loses something. If you like your metal slow and simple with grooving riffs and semi-alternative styled vocals then you might like this. If you prefer your metal a bit more melodic or with a bit more bite then look elsewhere.
