Amoricide
The Essence of Evil
May 2007
Released: 2006, Self-released
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

Now let´s get thrashed a bit more again...after many other Thrash Metal releases that have pleasingly crossed my rewarding path just lately. Amoricide, this trio hails from Fort Worth, TX, and the band has just put out an 8-song CD, titled THE ESSENCE OF EVIL that is yet another piece of proof that old school Thrash Metal is alive and doing really well – as if it never really disappeared in the very first place. The band has already released one 5-song demo called GIVE ME METAL OR GIVE ME DEATH! back in 2004, and since then they have been making some noise by doing some gigs fairly frequently.

THE ESSENCE OF EVIL is actually a very decent sounding release from the Amoricide camp, introducing the band as a pretty mean and aggressive sounding old school Thrash Metal act that obviously appeals to many fans of this particular genre in question. The closest band that I can think of in comparison to them, are the Canadian thrashers Infernäl Mäjesty. Chris Lewis, who plays bass and sings in Amoricide, sounds like almost like Chris Bailey´s (ex-Infernäl Mäjesty) identical twin cousin. And it just doesn´t end with Chris Lewis´ voice only (which brings up some of those comparisons to Infernäl Mäjesty), but their songs also have some familiar vibes in Infernäl Mäjesty´s direction, too. The most convincingly entertaining Amoricide is in such songs as “Enslaved”, “Flood of Sand”, “Unmarked Grave” and “When the First of Many Falls” that are all heavy, mid-tempo Thrash Metal tunes, having many catchy elements in them that just don´t fail to grab your attention. What also comes as a very pleasant surprise, the band has decided to cover Slayer´s “Kill Again” for this release - and oh man, Amoricide does lots of justice to the original version. “Kill Again” is seriously one of the better Slayer cover songs I´ve heard done by any band, so devil´s horns up for Amoricide for the well-done job with it.

THE ESSENCE OF EVIL showcases in a fine way what Amoricide are capable of doing, and I don´t think that old school Thrash Metal fans want to skip this record. Absolutely worth checking out.
