American Dog
Red, White, Black and Blue
December 2002
Released: 2002, Outlaw
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: JP

Gawd Damn …these dogs kick some ass! AMERICAN DOG are back wearing their unabashed Yankee pride on the chest and they wear it well.

In my previous review of their EP, SIX PACK, I expressed a little hesitation about the fact that this could be a one trick pony writing on a single lyrical topic of drinking. Well, the band proved me wrong, cranked it up a notch and added a little bit of diversity and depth, which gives the band a more well rounded feel. Don’t worry they haven’t gone soft and in fact lead off track “Shitkicker” is just that, a hell of tune that will bring a tear to the eye of ol’ Ted Nugent.

The production is full and warm, the lyrics are still dumb and fun, if perhaps a little more heartfelt in the slower moments and the formula is still intact. The band have taken their kick ass rock ‘n’ roll down south attitude and dare I say, perfected it?

Great Americana cover, streamlined packaging with no lyrics but a couple dozen live and studio shots as well as an explanatory essay about the poor guitarist who got smoked by a car and lived to rock on. Party rock song title of the year: “I Keep Drinkin’ (You’re Still Ugly) !! Raise a beer, and not some fancy Belgian import in a tall glass either…grab a Bud, slap it on and enjoy. I did!
