Gavin Harper and Christopher Bowes started Alestorm as a duo that played in various pubs all around Perth, Scotland. They recorded an EP in 2006 and with the release of the EP along with pressure from the fans for a full CD, the duo realized that they needed to be a “real” group, and the search for members began. Before they began recording an entire album they released another EP so that the new members could adjust and be comfortable. Buzz about the band began to grow and several European and American radio stations began to play the band’s songs. Drummer Swierczek left the band in early 2007 and was replaced by Ian Wilson.
Alestorm’s music sounds like nothing I’ve heard before; it’s a mix of Scottish battle metal and a stew of metal/punk with Scottish folk music influences. The music is powerful, energetic and contains a large amount of humor. It seems like they don’t take themselves too seriously, which is refreshing and fun. Even though the folk instruments are played by a keyboard, it sounds and feels quite genuine. Most of the songs are extremely sing-a-long friendly and the album is, to say the least, a real party starter.
The songs are mostly about pirates, getting drunk, treasures, raids and the sea. The material is really even; it’s a charming album and I’m very impressed by them. The more you listen to CAPTAIN MORGAN’S REVENGE the more you’ll love it; the songs just get stronger and stronger. If you have a sense of humor, this is truly an album you’re gonna love. Every element on this album from the cover artwork, the music, the lyrics and everything else works together in perfect harmony. Alestorm have released one of the happiest and most charming albums so far this year, so get on board and join the Alestorm crew.
