Allhelluja
Pain Is The Game
March 2007
Released: 2006, Scarlet Records/Sound Pollution
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

This is the second studio album by the Italian/Danish act Allhelluja, fronted by the charismatic Jacob Bredahl from the Danish death metal act Hatesphere. Their debut INFERNO MUSEUM came out in 2005 and it was very well-received across Europe. Now it’s time for the band to prove that they can repeat that success.

Like the debut, the album is filled with dirty, groovy, simple hard rock and death’n’roll. If you mixed Motörhead, Entombed, and Kyuss together you’d have Allhellujah. Jacob Bredahl mixed the album in his own studio (Smart’n’Hard) and it was mastered by the notorious Tue Madsen, so the outcome ought to sound perfect - which it definitely does. The production is raw and shitty and it fits the music like a glove.

It starts off extremely well with “Are You Ready”, “Superhero Motherfucker Superman”, and “Hey J”. All of the songs are like a kick in the crotch with their intense and hard sound. Bredahl is a great singer and he shows that he has a versatile voice that manages to do more than just scream. After that, it seems like the band got stuck in the same songwriting formula, because most parts of the songs sounds alike and the material isn’t varied at all.

The album could have used a little more diverse sound to get a higher rating. It’s good, but it doesn’t have anything out of the ordinary. It’s an album I think you should buy, but don’t expect any life-changing moments. PAIN IS THE GAME is a partystarter for sure - but just a starter. After that you need something more fun to listen to. It’s a good attempt, but I think they can do better than this.
