Alestorm
Sunset On The Golden Age
October 2014
Released: 2014, Napalm Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: JP

Looking at the cover of Alestorms’ new album SUNSET ON THE GOLDEN AGE is the remarkable similarity in the cover art to the most recent Axel Rudi Pell album, INTO THE STORM. I’m sure it was not the intention of Ingo Romling, who has done most of the art for Alestorm over the years, but it is noticeable.

The Scottish Pirate-Metal band are back with album number four and it is good as anything they have done. The core of the group has stayed the same and they have added Elliot Vernon on keyboards. There are many similarities between this album and the previous ones, as one would expect. The band has not altered their sound in the slightest. The accordion, fiddles and whistles bring the folk element as the whirling, jig-inspired tunes bouncy along at a jaunty pace.

The lyrics are also a highlight with the requisite cover (Hangover) and lots of songs about drinking and fighting, fighting and drinking. ‘Quest For Ships’ brings the humour to the fore and is sure to be a fan favourite in the live venue. Vocalist Chris Bowes leads the charge backed with spirited gang vocals all over the choruses.

There are a couple of minor changes, this is the first Alestorm album without their mascot, ‘Captain Morgan’. The band have also tried their hand at writing an epic piece, the album closer and title track running almost 12 minutes long, the longest song they have written to date. Aside from that, the band delivers what we want, a lusty album of pirate-themed battle tunes and drinking jigs.

Of the several pirate-themed bands sailing the seas of Metal, Alestorm are probably the best and most well-known and SUNSET ON THE GOLDEN AGE will help convince any non-believers.
