A Sound of Thunder
Out of the Darkness
April 2012
Released: 2012, Nightmare Records
Rating: 1.0/5
Reviewer: Infamousbutcher

OUT OF THE DARKNESS is the second album from Washington DC’s A Sound of Thunder, a progressive / power metal band that’s been around since 2008. Their other releases include a self-titled EP and their first album, METAL RENNAISSNACE. OUT OF THE DARKNESS was not a good headbanging time and it was a chore to get through. What stands out most about the album is singer Nina Osegueda. She can be viewed as the band’s greatest asset and biggest problem at the same time. Her voice is powerful but at times does not fit the music. During slower songs (“Discovery”, “This Too Shall Pass”) her voice sounds like it would be perfect for country music. The promo information with the album compared her to Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson, which is absurd.

Many of the songs are between 6 and 8 minutes long, usually including an atmospheric opening. Music is in the vein of Dio’s and Ozzy’s solo material in terms of guitar, bass, and drums, but it is ordinary and unspectacular. I understand why A Sound of Thunder is part of the Dio Disciples tour since their style of music fits. No issues with production, all parts are distinct and clear. Some of the lyrics are laughable and cheesy, particularly “The Nightwitch” and “Kill That Bitch”.

The key to enjoying OUT OF THE DARKNESS is whether or not you like Nina Osegueda’s voice. I did not think it was metal enough so I won’t be spinning this album in the future.
