Ascension Of Terror
March 2002
Released: 2002, HammerHeart
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Arto Lehtinen

Erhhgg...I got a small problem now. According to the bio Aeternus claim to be playing Dark Metal.. But the term Dark Metal.. I used to be under the impression that a band doing the Dark Metal stuff is a more or less softer sounding combo with the mandatory keyboards, not raw and even a little bit primitive sounding the death/black stuff with some old school thrash metal elements tied up combo. Well at least when cranking up the new Aeternus album I can't help getting the impression of that kind. Blaah what the heck anyway... Aeternus doesn't pound on 666 miles per hour throughout the whole album instead there are a lot of mid tempo and harmony, let's say now, headbanding parts. Even though Ascension Of Terror has been carried out in the legendary Grieghallen studio with Pytten in the helmet the sound policy hasn't fortunately been taken to the most extreme black metal style, instead Aeternus operates more in the obscure raw death/thrash style, well some dark metal elements may pop up, with the pretty raw and nihilistic sounds. But unfortunately the construction of songs is then another thing, which is a huge minus point. Basically the material sounds pretty similar all the time and as a matter of fact, the break between tracks separate them from each other, apart from Denial Of Salvation which more melodic riffs are anyway exceptional.

To sum up: a decent album anyway, but it will be swallowed into the endless well of promo cds.
