Ahab is a German band founded by Middnattsol members Christian and Daniel. Shortly thereafter they were joined by Endzeit member Stephan. Ahab has released a demo called “The Oath” prior to this album.



It seems like this album is themed around the Herman Melville classic Moby Dick, which isn’t surprising given the band’s name. Ahab calls their music “German Funeral Doom” and it is certainly doom. It had been a long time since I’d heard such slow music. After hearing the album for the first time I just wanted to lay down and die; nothing happens on the entire album!



The doom metal has a strange mix of growling lead vocals and ordinary vocals. To be honest, there aren’t that many parts that actually include vocals; instead, there are a lot of long instrumental parts that make no sense. THE CALL OF THE WRETCHED SEA includes 7 tracks and a 70-minute playing time, which means that each song is about 10 minutes long. On top of all that, it’s hard to distinguish one song from another because most of them sound alike. The entire album feels like a single, boring song.



I’m normally a fan of doom metal but Ahab is unbearable. I have tried to like this album and I have given it a lot of time in my CD player, but I can’t seem to like it in any possible way. If you were depressed before you put on this album I’m sure you’ll want to kill yourself after you have listened to it.
