Perennial under-achievers, Aeon return with their third album in five years and it should really come as no surprise to learn that they're still stuck on a similar note to the one that rang out the conclusion to 2008's RISE TO DOMINATE.

For starters, the Swedes remain as incensed at Christianity as ever, and they harp on about the ills of the world's oldest organized religion with, ironically, all of the zeal of an evangelical preacher for the duration of their latest disc. Musically their infatuation with the technical discordance of Morbid Angel and minor chord grooves of Deicide remains glaringly evident also - aided and abetted by an admittedly superlative mix courtesy of the death metal genre's current go-to guy, Eric Rutan. They deliver cuts like "Kill Them All" and "Abomination To God" with commendable conviction and a technical proficiency that puts the praise they've received from such luminaries as Cannibal Corpse’s Alex Webster into some perspective.

Still, the problem here is that after you've managed to look past the bells and whistles, Aeon continue to offer a painfully ordinary product. Jesus-baiting notwithstanding, Aeon's output is thoroughly bereft of the personality so integral to their influences' success. When they do think outside the box ("Of Fire") the results are extraordinary. Why then, you're bound to ask yourself with head in hands, do they not do so more often?
