Afterdown
Resolution [EP]
July 2011
Released: 2011, Self Released
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Metal-Rules.com UK Team

Afterdown is an insane force of nature when they play live. From the hooky guitar riffs, to the insane vocals of Neil Colley, they can control and please any crowd with their little finger. Thankfully Afterdown manages to capture all that anarchy and power from a live performance and place it a perfectly written, recorded and mastered EP. Resolution contains 3 huge Afterdown anthems which is a perfect place to start for those who have never heard of Afterdown. Just think of music that sounds like Pantera on speed and a voice which would put James Hetfield to shame, and that’s Afterdown to a T. Sounds fucking brilliant doesn’t it!

Opening with ‘Brothers in Arms’; Resolution hits you at 500mph from the word go. That opening guitar riff is mind blowing, and when the rhythm section kicks into the song, it feels as if your head is being pounded by a giant hammer. But, out of all the musicianship, the best part is the lyrics. They are extremely catchy, and is the kind of arena anthem where you could imagine everyone singing along to: “Another day, another life, fades away, here by my side. Stand as one, and pray to the stars, to bring us home, we’re Brothers in Arms” It’s a huge moment on the EP, and is one of the best chorus’s that you will hear in a long time.

‘Lies’ sounds like an opener to an Afterdown set. It’s a charging anthem that shows off the musicianship of the members of the band. From the head banging sensational guitar riff, to when Neil’s voice comes in you are guaranteed a 100% heavy metal experience.

Afterdown are killer when it comes to writing and performing amazing metal, and ‘Lies’ as well as ‘Brothers in Arms’ are two examples of just how good a small Manchester band can be. Sure they may not be that well know, but they are doing it a hell of a lot better than a lot of the bands playing metal in the 21st century!

Resolution closes on ‘Broken and Bruised’, which unlike the other two tracks on the EP, starts off quite slow and mellow. It’s this start which builds and builds into a climax for the insane chorus where Mr. Colley wails his heart out in an emotional but never the less punchy close to the album, leaving the listener with a tear in their eye as the amazing EP has finished.

So, if you have a bit of cash spare in your pocket, go out and buy Resolution, as even though it may have been released by a small Mancunian band, they are capable of delivering the heavy metal thunder both live and on album!
