Across The Burning Sky is comprised of five guys who have been playing around the scene since the mid 1990s. Deliberately enigmatic, they claim to be all about the music and nothing more. This is to be applauded.
The opening of their FB page starts so:“Melodic Death Metal as Melodic Death Metal can be!
These are the words that describe Across The Burning Sky best. It is not their intention to invent new music. They do not want to open up new horizons.” Well, I absolutely concur. There really is nothing new here.
Undoubtedly, these guys can play. They can seriously play, in fact. The whole album is perfectly competent, it’s just all been done before. To the point that you’re not sure whether or not they are even covers, these are so tried and tested. I don’t want to sound like I don’t like the album, it’s fine, I just find it a facsimile of what’s come before, which is kinda what I think they were aiming for.
I have very little more to say about it, to be honest. Perfectly good death metal (if a little on the light side) but essentially quite forgettable.
There is one thing for which I have to give them the utmost, heartfelt credit – these guys clearly don’t give a shit what I, or anyone else, think. They are doing what they love and carrying on what is now a kinda tradition. If there more people in the world like this, it would be a better place.
