6h33
Orphan of Good Manners
July 2011
Released: 2011, M&O Music
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

So this is pretty cool. 6h33 is a French quartet who honestly doesn’t sound like anything I’ve heard before. While that’s a little daunting, their debut album ORPHAN OF GOOD MANNERS earns massive cool points on that merit alone. Taking elements of Devin Townsend, Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, math metal, and general bizzaro, 6h33 drops those ingredients into a musical blender and hits puree. The resulting cocktail is an awkward, spastic, wacko, and all together spectacular madness.

The opening intro “Lift Off” deceivingly hints at Slipknot styled industro-metal, but the opening punctuation of “Beretta” quickly resolves that concern. Consistently warping time signatures, slappy bass lines, tinkly keyboards, and vocals ranging from serene to bellowing howls; it’s an exhausting 4 minutes, but it’s f@!king intriguing. And within the craziness, the tunes still manage to convey a sonic heaviness. Some are a little more straightforward than others (“Black Becky,” “The Only One,” Karmacoma”), while others are just plain out there (“Drunk in Krakow,” “The Fall of Pop”). The two part opus “Little Silly Thing” and closing title more than reminded me of ANGEL DUST-era Faith No More, which is fine, because it’s a surprisingly successful homage.

In keeping with the kooky swing of the album, 6h33 maintain secret identities behind hockey masks, luchador masks, and general improvisations. Sure it’s schticky, but the album works and it fits the vibe of the tunes. ORPHAN OF GOOD MANNERS is certainly different from what you’re probably used to listening to, but in all the right ways. Definitely one of the bright surprises of 2011, ORPHAN OF GOOD MANNERS is available now through M&O Music.
