Y&T to play at Sweden Rock 2014

October 25th, 2013

Y&Ts first concert in Sweden, at SRF 2003, remains one of the most lauded in the festival’s history. So what could be more appropriate than Y&T coming to SRF 2014 as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations? It was in 1974 that the band was formed by, among others, singer/guitarist Dave Meniketti. Their original monicker Yesterday & Today was abbreviated before the release of their third album “Earthshaker” (1981). This was in turn a milestone in hard rock, combining power and melody in equal measures. Efforts like “Black tiger” (1982), “Mean streak” (1983) and “In rock we trust” (1984) confirmed the band’s stature. In the 90s Y&T folded twice, and returned permanently in 2001. Sadly, bassist Phil Kennemore succumbed to cancer in 2011, but Dave Meniketti and cohorts found the strength to move on even after this devastating blow.

If you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, visit the Apple store for Martin Popoff’s “Ye Olde Metal: Y&T’s Black Tiger” app.

This app, priced at $2.99, marks the 30th anniversary year of Y&T’s Black Tiger release by telling the story of the making of the album, in lead singer/lead guitarist Dave Meniketti’s own words. It’s loaded with Y&T photos, reviews, an essay, and more.
Available through the Apple store:

Finally on the map with their scorching first album for A&M (Earthshaker was their third overall), California’s Y&T were ready to strike with their fourth record, 1982’s mighty Black Tiger. This app marks the 30th anniversary year of Black Tiger’s release by telling the story of the making of the album – in singer and lead guitarist Dave Meniketti’s own words.

The Y&T Black Tiger app stems from an as-yet-unpublished Ye Olde Metal “essay” or “chapter,” Ye Olde Metal being a series of five books thus far, examining albums from 1968 through 1978, in detailed, one-per-chapter format.

The app’s author is Martin Popoff, who has penned 36 books on hard rock, heavy metal, classic rock and record collecting. For the app’s text, Popoff draws on three recorded interviews he did with Meniketti – one in 2002 and two in 2007. Popoff also penned a new review of Black Tiger for this app, and an essay in which he argues that Y&T were a kick-ass NWOBHM band who, through no fault of their own, happened to be from San Francisco. Martin currently resides in Toronto and can be reached through or

The Black Tiger app includes extensive audio of Meniketti describing how the album was recorded (at Ridge Farm studio in England) – including his comments on the album’s tracks and on touring with AC/DC in 1982.

The app is enriched by lots of images from 1982 – including photos of the Black Tiger recording sessions from Meniketti’s personal collection.

This app features the following pages:

  • Recording the album
  • Album tracks, plus a page for each individual track
  • Album review – “Ready to Strike!”
  • Honourary NWOBHMetallers
  • Album discography
  • About the author – Martin Popoff
  • Links

The Black Tiger app is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. The app has layouts that have been specifically optimised for iPhone and for iPad.

Keep an eye out for more apps in the Ye Olde Metal series.

Y&T – Dave Meniketti

October 10th, 2011

U.S. hard rock band Y&T was originally formed in San Francisco in early 70’s. The band soon earned a good reputation as a great live band and their self-titled debut was released in 1976. In year 1981 Y&T got its change when they got signed by major A&M label. The band then released a string of strong albums including EARTHSHAKER, BLACK TIGER and MEANSTREAK. In 1987 they switched to John Kalodner’s Geffen Records and released two more studio albums: CONTAGIOUS and TEN before splitting up in 1991 after the release of “farewell” live album YESTERDAY AND TODAY LIVE. Unexpectedly the band got together in 1995 and released album MUSICALLY INCORRECT and then two years later ENDANGERED SPECIES followed. In 2001 band did several shows but it took one more year before the fulltime re-union took its place. FACEMELTER, Y&T’s first studio album in 13 years, was released in 2010. Bands original bassist and founding member Phil Kennemore sadly passed away in January of 2011 but even that didn’t stop Y&T to carry on. The band, leaded by another original and extra ordinary guitarist/vocalist Dave Meniketti, is still going on strong and it seems that this band has still lot to say in the future. The band opened up their six week European –tour in Helsinki on late September and then we had a pleasure to sit down with Meniketti himself and discuss about bands future as well as many other interesting topics. Y&T – Bassist Phil Kennemore Dead At 57

January 7th, 2011
Y&T - Bassist Phil Kennemore

Y&T - Bassist Phil Kennemore

Y&T guitarist/vocalist Dave Meniketti has released the following message:

“It is with profound sadness and disbelief that I tell you that my best buddy for 37 years passed away this morning, January 7th, 2011 at 1 AM at Stanford Hospital. Bravely and steadfastly battling the horrible spectacle of lung cancer, at the end he was surrounded by his family members, and the Y&T family up until his final breath.

All the beautiful things that I could say about my buddy Phil could never be summed up in a short sentence or two, and I promise that I will be back to say so much more about how I feel about him and his talents in due time. But for now, at 3 AM, after just having returned home from his passing, let me at least put this out there.

Phil Kennemore was not only a sweet and passionate man with his life, friends and family, but as an artist, he also had that rare ability to say what was on his mind with the most eloquent, clever, and to-the-point lyrics, yet could turn it on it’s head in a second with some other viewpoint on reality and nail the point dead center. He was able to do what very few can – say the things that others have been thinking, but could never quite seem to put into words. He has always had a keen knack for doing that.

As a musician, with those huge fingers, his bass playing was always loud, strong, and deep, filling the largest or smallest of stages equally.

He had an amazingly strong life force that has influenced everyone who ever had the opportunity to be called a friend of his. I am forever grateful for our lifelong friendship, that was always in place throughout the worst and best of times. I will miss his sense of humor, his amazing wit, but most of all I will always miss not seeing him to my left on the stages I will play from this moment forward.

Yes, he was one of the class guys on this planet, and in this business, and I will always do what I can to spread the legacy of Phil Kennemore across the globe on every stage that I land on.

You know how much I love you Phil, and you knew how much your fans and fellow musicians loved and respected you. There was nothing left unsaid. You had a rich and wonderful life and I can only tell you that I was happy to have been alongside you every step of the glorious way.

Cheers to you, Phil.

Your friend forever, Dave.”

This concert is an allstar line up of many of Kennemore’s friends from bands such as Queensryche, Dokken, RATT, Black Sabbath, DIO, Alice Cooper, Testament, and Y&T all donating their time to perform on New Year’s Eve. This is a must-see concert and is going to rock!

  • · Jimmy DeGrasso (Alice Cooper)

Jävlä Swedenrock, här kommer vi igen. The annual roadtrip to Swedenrock by the Finnish Metal‑Rules.Com  team is already the tenth time in a row.  The  2010 line‑up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock. Therefore, over 70 bands offered nothing but an utter blast and a helluv an experience for the attendees to enjoy metal and rock. Swedenrock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economomic situation worldwide. As mentioned in the first sentence, this is the tenth time in a row when Sweden Rock has been featured on Metal‑, so it is quite logical for us to give a real in‑depth article of several bands performing at Sweden Rock. The  weather wasn’t ideal compared to previous years. It either rained or was windy with a little sunshine. But we were there for bands, not for having some beach party. We are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Enjoy or die !!!

Jimmy DeGrasso – Alice Cooper, Hail!, F5, ex- Megadeth, Y&T, Suicidal Tendencies

January 20th, 2010
Jimmy DeGrasso

American born drummer Jimmy DeGrasso is probably best known for his work with Megadeth, but he’s also been involved with many other interesting bands and projects during his long career.  In mid 80’s, after moving from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles, Jimmy first did studio sessions with the “Prince of Darkness” himself, Ozzy Osbourne, before getting his first permanent job from Californian rockers Y & T in 1986. After many successful years with them, Jimmy decided to leave Y & T in 1990 and in the subsequent years he toured with such names as Lita Ford and Alice in Chains before joining the thrash/punk/hardcore crossover  group Suicidal Tendencies in 2004. Unfortunately, the band broke up soon later and next Jimmy joined Alice Cooper’s touring band. He’s been working with Alice on and off since then. In 1998 he joined Megadeth and stayed with them until the band (temporarily) disbanded in 2002. Today Jimmy is a highly sought after session and touring drummer.  He’s also a full time member of all-star band “HAIL!” along with his former Megadeth bandmate David Ellefsson, Sepultura guitarist Andreas Kisser, and vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens. Jimmy has also another band with Ellefsson called F5 and they released the album THE RECKONING in 2008.  In  December (2009) Jimmy came to Finland with Alice Cooper and then I had a chance to sit down with him and discuss his past, present and near future plans. Y&T – Back On The Road
Interview by: Keith McDonald

< ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

It has been almost 20 years since Y&T hit the road and played < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />New York, opening for Ace Frehley way back in 1987. The band released their debut album in 1974, yet are sometimes classified as a band from the 80?s, which at times can be good and bad. Band leader and lead singer Dave Meniketti reassembled his band and have been playing select dates around the East Coast. I had the chance to see the band play live and ask Dave about Y&T and what the future plans are. You can check out his website for info on his solo career and of course, Y&T at
