WOODS OF YPRES Merchandise Bundles Available to Benefit David Gold

June 6th, 2012

On Dec 21, 2011, there was a shock wave felt around the world when David Gold of Ontario’s WOODS OF YPRES died on Highway 400. In loving memory of this immensely talented artist and beautiful human being, the family of David Gold has made available a range of merchandise bundles at this location.

Paypal information is included, so please make a purchase in memory of the man that meant so much to so many with his creative, emotionally deep contribution to music. All proceeds from the sales are used to cover funeral costs and other expenses resulting from David’s death.

David’s mother Esther Gold wrote about her son in her e-mail to us and we are honored to assist in spreading the word.

We and thousands of people are learning to live life without David. David was courageous to create songs about love, love lost, facing challenges, celebrating joys and accepting and understanding consequences of another’s behavior. None have control over others, but one has control of reactions and responses, and then makes choices. We all are survivors of loss.

With no exaggeration,  hundreds of people have contacted us  with testimonies about how David’s lyrics impacted their lives, helped them to make changes resulting in personal growth, motivating them and inspiring them to follow their dreams.

As David’s family, of me, Esther, siblings Michael, Laura and Marie, we need help to promote David’s CD and merchandise sales.

We had a Tribute concert in Toronto and one in Sault Ste. Marie. The Metal Community has become family as we all share in our time of deep sorrow. I was proudly, M.O.F., mom of four, now I am M.O.M., Mom of many. Those who grieve David as a multi-talented musician, admit they grieve the loss of their brother. I have become a Mom figure to many and David’s siblings are now considered to be family to those who miss David.

There is so much positive press created about David. It is said” when we are born, we cry. We hope when we die, thousands cry.” In  David’s case, thousands cried, and their lives are forever changed because their David is no longer with them.

Thank you for helping to honor my son, and to recognize all who must learn to live life remembering David’s lyrics, “love the living while they are alive,” and life is not the destination, but it is the journey.” David admitted writing lyrics, with empathy, for those who needed to hear them, or learn from them, and he wrote from his own experiences from his heart and  from his soul. David was a man with many dimensions, not just his music. He was well educated, with three university degrees, was a teacher, a multi-talented musician, burned the candle from both ends, with high energy and  determination. In the Finnish language is a word “SISU.” David was “SISU,” personified.

May his music live on forever.”

In December, WOODS OF YPRES frontman David Gold lost his life in a terrible accident just outside Barrie, ON, Canada. Now, fans have a chance to hear their first real taste of what ‘Woods 5’ had to offer as “Kiss My Ashes Goodbye (Part I)” is being streamed exclusively via Hails & Horns. Woods of Ypres Statement on David Gold’s death

January 6th, 2012
RIP David Gold

RIP David Gold

Woods of Ypres frontman David Gold was tragically killed in a road traffic accident on 21st December, outside Barrie, in his home country of Canada.

In accordance with the wishes of David’s family and band mates, the recently completed album “Woods V: Grey Skies & Electric Light” will be released, as planned in February.

The Gold family issued a statement for David’s friends and fans as follows:

“The Gold family is incredibly saddened in the wake of David’s sudden passing. We want to thank everyone for the ongoing outpour of support, as it is greatly appreciated. Although he was only 31 years old, David lived more than most would be able to in an entire lifetime. He was well educated, well travelled, incredibly talented, passionate, compassionate, and loved dearly by thousands of friends, family, and fans all over the world. David’s legacy will not only live on, but continue to grow. We ask you to keep David’s spirit alive by continuing to listen to his music, and let him inspire your life.”

Donations can be made to support his funeral costs through his Paypal account at davidypresgold@gmail.com

Joel Violette was David’s band mate and long-time collaborator, he had the following statement:

“I am completely shocked and utterly at a loss for words about David’s passing. I write this with a very heavy heart, and I can only imagine what David’s family is going through, as well as the rest of his friends. My heart goes out to them all.

This tragedy comes at a truly inopportune time for Woods of Ypres, though there is never an opportune time for these things to happen. We’d booked to tour Europe in support of Woods 5, we’d recruited the talented Rae Amitay and Brendan Hayter, and we were only waiting for January rehearsals before setting off. We had an exciting album to play and exciting places to play it.

It’s hard to say what is next for Woods. David was unequivocally the voice, heart, and soul of the band. In the last year or so David and I planned out many projects for Woods of Ypres in great detail. It would be a shame for none of them to come to fruition, and David would have wanted his fans to hear them. So I will examine these, discuss them with Earache, and endeavour to complete what can be completed given the circumstances. David was always and still is the essence of Woods of Ypres. So if and when any Woods projects come to light, it will be with this fact firmly and unwaveringly in mind.

For the present time my immediate task is to promote and release Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light. We finished the audio portion in August at Beach Road Studios, and David D’Angelo finished the stunning album art last month. All that remains is press and promotion for the album. And I’m more than willing to do my own share as well as David’s, with the same passion, enthusiasm, and good humor David would have had. So please direct any interviews to me, and I will be thrilled to answer questions.

It was an honour to have worked with David, an honour to have shared the stage with him, and an honour to have spent a summer writing and recording with him. He was an extremely talented, driven, and generous man. He will be sorely missed.”

Earache will be working closely with David’s family moving forwards, and join the hundreds of fans around the world that have offered their condolences to the Gold family.

Against the Plagues vocalist statement on David Ypres

December 24th, 2011

I wanted to take the time to briefly discuss a good man we lost recently – David Gold. David Gold was not just a good man, but a damn good friend whom I had the honor of sharing the stage with on numerous occasions.  David , the guys in “Woods” , and I shared many laughs, drinks, and great times in Texas.
During his stay in Texas he and the band stayed the night at my house watching movies like “Conan the Barbarian”, drinking Whiskey and Lonestar, and trying to write down 10 different orders of “ Whataburger“ at 3 in the morning. We  discussed philosophy, music, and 80s cartoons.
Since then, David and I bonded and kept touch with each other on a regular basis online and on the phone.  I can recall that he’d send me random calls just to hear me do an imitation of someone.  We chatted not too long ago discussing the New Album. There are many things I can say about David. I recall when he told me that I was the “ funniest and most entertaining part of the tour”, which really meant a lot.  David was truly one of the hardest working individuals in the underground metal scene. His resilience inspires me.  Without a doubt, I will spend the next few days looking at old pictures and old e-mails and reminisce .
I am deeply grief-stricken by this incident – as I sit here in illness, I cannot begin to imagine how those closest to him must feel, and I wish I could share the pain next to them, in person.
David will be missed. The music he leaves behind, is a gift we  all should cherish.

The world doesn’t know what it has lost.

WOODS OF YPRES Founder David Gold Passes

The below press piece was posted at Bravewords.com.

BW&BK has learned that WOODS OF YPRES frontman/drummer/founder David Gold was killed in an accident near Barrie, Ontario on December 22nd. Information surrounding his passing has yet to be made public.

A long time friend and supporter of BW&BK, and without a doubt one of the hardest working musicians – independent or signed – on the Canadian metal scene, David will be sorely missed. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends in this tragic time.

David’s family will be holding a memorial service in his home town of Sault Ste. Marie, tentatively scheduled for December 28th. Details will be confirmed in the coming days.

WOODS OF YPRES POST NORTH AMERICAN TOUR UPDATE, VIDEO AVAILABLE

May 12th, 2011

Canadian blackened doom metallers WOODS OF YPRES are on the road in North America after kicking off a headlining tour last week.

The month-long “Pain & Piss” tour will see the band trekking around the USA and Canada following the recent re-release of the band’s latest album, WOODS 4: THE GREEN ALBUM.

Watch the band’s first tour update video:

WOODS OF YPRES frontman DAVID GOLD comments:

“Writing to you from a murder motel in Western Pennsylvania where we’re pounding Polish vodka and editing tour videos until 4am EST…  We’re back on the road again already this year, further supporting the release of W4: The Green Album in North America!  The PAIN & PISS Tour (because that’s what tour really is, for us, referencing the chorus of our song “Wet Leather”) will have us playing 34 shows in 37 days, covering Eastern USA, Western Canada, and a counter-clockwise DOOM-loop of the coast of the good ol’ US of A.

“The new setlist includes a little of almost everything!  W4: The Green Album songs, some classic WOODS OF YPRES black metal from 2002’s “Against the Seasons: Cold Winter Songs from the Dead Summer Heat”, half of the “Summer Black Metal” from 2004’s “Pursuit of the Sun & Allure of the Earth” and even a track from our fresh new Woods IV.5 “home” 7-inch vinyl release!  The only album we’re not playing songs from is the cold and bleak “WIII: Deepest Roots & Darkest Blues” which is simply out of season and hard to incorporate into a summer tour of the hot and hotter USA (but catch those “Northern Cold” songs again on tours this fall and winter, already in the works!).

“As soon as we get off the road in June, we go back into full-time writing mode and then into the studio this August to record the next WOODS OF YPRES full-length: “Woods 5″.  More details soon!”

WOODS OF YPRES guitarist JOEL VIOLETTE adds:

“Hey everyone, how’s it going?  We’re going strong here on day 7 of our 38-day North American tour.  The dates with Novembers Doom, Gwynbleidd, and GDZ this weekend were awesome, and it was an honour to share the stage with those guys!  Now tonight we’re hard at work carving up the first v-log from this tour.  Tomorrow we hit the Motor City, hard!  See you on tour!”

WOODS OF YPRES FRONTMAN DISCUSSES THE WRITING OF ‘WOODS 4: THE GREEN ALBUM’ – PART 2

March 18th, 2011

WOODS 4: THE GREEN ALBUM, the latest album from Canadian blackened doom merchants WOODS OF YPRES, has just been released in Europe and is due to hit North America on Tuesday, March 22nd.

WOODS OF YPRES founding member and frontman DAVID GOLD recently took some time to discuss the writing process for the album.  Read part 2 below:

“A year from the day I arrived back in Canada, July 2009, we were in the studio with a new band, two tours already behind us, and we were recording W4: The Green Album.  By the fall and another tour later, we were signed to Earache Records.  Now, March 2011, The Green Album gets a worldwide release, less than two years since we started writing it and less than four years since I first said ‘fuck it all’ and moved to Seoul.  What can I say?  The plan?  It was just so crazy that it worked!

“The Green Album was certainly the only album I knew how to write as it was the only thing still preoccupying what was left of my heart and brain at the time and I’m thankful that something good could come of it all, after all.  The 16 songs of the album tell the story through the stages of such a journey that inevitably gets a whole lot worse before it gets any better.  What starts with total life-changing devastation ends with the arrival of spring again and the promise of summer.  If nothing else at all, at the time, it was enough.

“W4: The Green Album was certainly an inspired creation and has more reason to exist than anything else we’d ever written to date.  It wasn’t just more music for music’s sake, but literally life and death, to me.  That album is honest, about something real and based on true events.  At nearly 80 minutes of music ranging from gothic doom, post-rock, sludge, prog and forest metal, listen, take what you like and leave the rest.

“These have been a rather painful four years for a lot of people.  If you’ve recently felt your world shift and experienced change against your will, you’ll likely relate to W4: The Green Album.  Four years later, acceptance is hope for the rest of the journey, for we’ve found that the journey does continue after all.  Grieve the loss of everything you once loved but always keep moving forward.  Drag that weight!”

WOODS OF YPRES FRONTMAN DISCUSSES THE WRITING OF ‘WOODS 4: THE GREEN ALBUM’ – PART 1

March 4th, 2011

Canadian blackened doom merchants WOODS OF YPRES are preparing for the worldwide release of their acclaimed album, WOODS 4: THE GREEN ALBUM.

Originally released in late 2009, WOODS 4: THE GREEN ALBUM is due to be reissued by Earache Records on March 14th in Europe and March 22nd in North America.

WOODS OF YPRES founding member and frontman DAVID GOLD discusses the writing process for the album (part 1):

“The writing process for W4: The Green Album began while sitting on my bed, aimlessly writing riffs in my Seoul, South Korea apartment during my year in exile while living and teaching there in 2007-2008.  The previous WOODS OF YPRES band had collapsed, as did all crucial parts of my former life in Toronto, Canada, suddenly in spring 2007.  I fled to Korea to keep myself busy with work and new experiences until I could sort myself out and figure out my next move.  I feared that if I were to slow down, I’d get low and drown.  I knew I had to go far away, fast, and stay there until life started to make sense to me again.

“I quit my Toronto day job of the previous four years on the morning of my 27th birthday that June.  During the following ten days, I packed what was left of myself into a suitcase and the rest into boxes and storage, and by July 1st, Canada Day, I found myself living and working in Seoul where everything was new, the future so completely unknown.  It was actually quite terrifying in the beginning.  Every waking moment was so uncomfortable that day to day living was agonizingly dreadful.  At some point I went numb and became indifferent to everything.  One day at a time, I developed a little more acceptance for the past while learning to live a little more within my new reality of life in Korea.  Once the numbness melted away and I started to feel, think and form some opinions again, I started to write again, too.

“At the beginning of the journey, summer 2007, I no longer had a band, or anything more than a job to go to and a place to sleep.  I was by myself, completely unknown on the other side of the world, 12 hours of time zones away from my former home and anything familiar.  Teaching work kept me challenged and very busy and gave me a sense of purpose, but when not knowing what to do outside of work hours, I retired to my apartment for the night, made myself some dinner, watched the US Army TV channel (the one channel I got in English), played guitar, maybe wrote riffs and maybe scribbled down a few thoughts that eventually became WOODS OF YPRES songs.

“Twelve months of hurt, exploring, longing, thinking, documenting, teaching, sleeping, waking, eating, drinking, walking around the city listening to Nick Cave, Katatonia and The Magnetic Fields on my iPod, venturing out, getting lost, finding my way and drumming for the Seoul, South Korea metal band NECRAMYTH later, plus a well earned, month long reward trip to Finland for metal and more drinking on the way home from Korea and I was back in Canada, wanting to bring WOODS OF YPRES back from the dead, much like I had done with myself.”

Check back soon for part 2.

WOODS OF YPRES TO EMBARK ON NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

February 24th, 2011

The Canadian blackened doom merchants, WOODS OF YPRES have lined up a North American tour in support of the EARACHE reissue of the their acclaimed 2009 effort, WOODS IV: THE GREEN ALBUM. This will be WOODS OF YPRES‘ first full-on tour since mainman David Gold got back from a teaching stint in Kuwait.

Back on the road where he belongs, David checked in to say a few words about his anticipation for the tour

“It’s perfect!  W4: The Green Album was always intended to be a “spring” album centred around themes of rain, renewal, reinvention and recycling of the soul and here we are at the dirty end of winter 2011, having The Green Album re-released on Earache Records and touring the east coast in the very green and hopeful but yet typically still cold and cloudy month of March. It’ll include a special green beer St. Patrick’s Day show in Worcester and a long awaited return to celtic-flavoured Eastern Canada!  So pack a cheap umbrella of which you can plan to get drunk and forget at the venue because us bad-luck-fucks are bringing our no-leaf-clover doom and gloom to your town this March with the black cloud-still-a-followin’ over our heads. Even though we’ve got nothin’ left to lose and no other purpose left in life but to exhibit our cathartic recklessness for your entertainment.

We knew what love was and now, we also know how to be cruel.  A WOODS OF YPRES show is a heavy, heaving slab of both.  It’s poison-medicine for both hardworking modern minds who’ve just given up on their dreams and fellow bleeding fucking hearts who no longer give a shit. Anyways, the timing of The Green Album re-release and The Green Album tour may be the first thing in the history of this band that has ever gone right…so we’re very excited and surprised about the coincidence, because that’s all is really is.  Bring your merch money for a “Wet Leather” t-shirt and a Green Album double-vinyl. See you in March!  Come drink beers, hear the band’s music and watch watch us personally destroy what’s left of ourselves!”

Here are the dates:

March 10 – Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario @ The Rosie
March 11 – Sudbury Ontario, @ The Serbian Centre (Sudbury Metalfeast)
March 12 – Barrie, Ontario @ The Fox Lounge
March 13 – Toronto, Ontario @ The Mod Club
