It may be some people’s epitome of hell, Michael Buble fans I’m looking at you, but for the metal/rock community Hellfest’s towering gateway looks positively pearly. This year’s line-up is so jam-packed that I was looking for the little glass jars and labels. You’d make a fortune if you could bottle any number of the diverse scope of bands on the bill, with the riffs left in natch, but I’d like them to play their sets first.
Once inside that gateway the layout is much the same as last year, and that isn’t meant in a well-they-clearly-couldn’t-be-arsed sense, because Hellfest could teach most others a thing or 20 on how to put together a fan-friendly festival. Except when it comes to the number of toilets on site that is.
Whilst the Hellfest tree still dominates in its stark simplicity, the hidden beer gardens have gained a snazzy gateway of their own, which invites you into the woodlands. Instead of a fairytale monster at the end of the path though, you’ll find a winebar, which is win-win really. And at night the scrap-metal merch stands and bars still glow with their own rooftop fires.
Stage-wise we’ve got Main Stage 1 and 2, which continue their staggered times so that as one plays, the other sets up, and vice versa. The result is no waiting around for soundchecks or bands to start, just back-to-back bam-bam-bam metal. A similar set-up is in place at the Altar and the Temple, where you can find black metal, death metal and the like, then there’s the Valley which is home to the stoner and doom types, and the Warzone where the punk and hardcore drops.
Steve Vai is an extraordinary American guitarist who has sold over 15 million albums worldwide. The man started his career in the early 80’s in Frank Zappa’s band with whom he recorded and toured for two years. Vai began a solo career in 1983 and to this date he has released eight studio albums, several live releases and played with several other bands including David Lee Roth and Whitesnake. Steve Vai has often been called a man who set the standard for guitar virtuosity in the 80’s and he has won three Grammy awards. The latest album STORY OF LIGHT was released through Vai’s own Favored Nations Records earlier this year and the following tour now finally bring the man back to Finland after seven year break. U.K. hard rock pioneers Deep Purple have been annual visitors in Finland for a long time and this year made no exception here. The current tour “The Songs That Built Rock” includes also a Frankfurt Philharmonic Orchestra with whom the band performed a string of their biggest hits as well some rarely played gems. In fact, it’s already been six years since they released their latest studio release RAPTURE OF THE DEEP but it looks that there is still demand as they now sold almost 7000 tickets for their show for the Hartwall Arena.
After one too many overcrowded festivals *cough*Wacken*cough* Ray and I keep a lookout for small or medium sized festivals to combine with sightseeing holidays, preferably in countries not yet travelled. So when the lineup for Graspop Metal Meeting 2011 was announced, we had our next destination.
Let Me Hear You Scream Sweden Rockkkk.Well the annual roadtrip to Swedenrock by the Finnish Metal Rules.com team is already into it’s 11th year! The 2011 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock in the line-up. Over 70 metal and rock bands offered one hell of an experience for the attendees. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economic situation worldwide and the ticket price had risen a little bit. ver these 11 years of coverage, it has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article of several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The weather once again showed positive and negative aspects like in 2010. It either rained or was windy with a little sunshine. But we were there for bands, not for having some beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Enjoy or die!!!
Whitesnake released their latest album NEVERMORE in March. The album has received great response and it marks the bands return more into its bluesy roots. The band has been regular visitors here in Finland since their rebirth in 2003 and this tour didn’t make any exception. It seems that there’s still good demand for Coverdale and his Snakes when approximately 4000 fans found their way to Old Hall in Helsinki.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day…t he perfect blend of rock and romance… Whitesnake has partnered with VEVO for the world premiere of the brand new video “Love Will Set You Free.” As of today, Monday, February 14th, the video can be viewed here. Directed by Devin DeHaven/Fortress Entertainment (Papa Roach, Method Man, Talib Kweli), the video was shot in Lake Tahoe, NV. “Love Will Set You Free” is the first single from the forthcoming Whitesnake album, FOREVERMORE, and is available for purchase from February 21st at all digital stores.
FOREVERMORE is due out on March 29th in North America and March 25th in Europe and finds founder/singer/songwriter David Coverdale and company returning to their no-holds-barred, bluesiest, sexiest rock n’ roll roots. This will be Whitesnake’s 11th album and the first release via the Italian-based Frontiers Records label. FOREVERMORE was recorded, produced and mixed by Los Bros Brutalos (Coverdale, Doug Aldrich and Michael McIntyre) at Snakebyte Studios and Grumblenott Studios & Villas in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, with additional work at Casa Dala, Sherman Oaks, CA.
Formed in 1977, and steered by the legendary David Coverdale, Whitesnake carry a rightful reputation as one of the world’s leading rock n’ roll bands. Coverdale’s blues roots, combined with a feral sense of rockin’ and rollin’, have consistently shaped the ‘Snake’s sound along with Coverdale’s love and appreciation of impeccable musicianship. Whitesnake’s ascent to the very top of the rock n’ roll heap was confirmed with 1987’s self-titled mega-platinum album, which saw two massive Top 10 hits, two #1 singles with “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love” and a virtual 24-hour domination of MTV around the world. WHITESNAKE, the legendary rock’n’roll legacy founded and formed by renowned singer/songwriter David Coverdale, unleashes a brand new storming ‘Snake statement, “Forevermore” on Frontiers Records on March 25th in Europe and March 29th in North America.
Their 11th studio album, “Forevermore” was recorded, produced and mixed by Coverdale, guitarist Doug Aldrich and Michael McIntyre at Snakebyte Studios and Grumblenott Studios & Villas in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, with additional work at Casa Dala, Sherman Oaks, CA, and WHITESNAKE will take to the road for a full world tour in support of the release.
Formed in 1977, and steered by the legendary Coverdale, WHITESNAKE carry a rightful reputation as one of the world’s leading rock’n’roll bands. Coverdale’s blues and soul roots, combined with a feral sense of rock and roll, have consistently shaped the ‘Snake’s sound, and add to that Coverdale’s love and appreciation of impeccable musicianship and you have a failsafe recipe for success.
Their ascent to the very top of the rock’n’roll tree was confirmed with 1987’s self-titled mega-platinum album, which saw two top 10 hits, two number one singles with ‘Here I Go Again’ and ‘Is This Love’ and a virtual 24 hour domination of MTV around the world. Such triumphs were surely foretold when as a young man from Saltburn-By-Sea; Coverdale enthusiastically answered the call to be Deep Purple’s singer. Such bombast, bravado, talent and passion have thus helped establish WHITESNAKE as the perennial platinum favorite they have become.
With “Forevermore” Coverdale has reignited an explosively fruitful vein of creativity with guitarist and co-writer/producer Aldrich, Reb Beach (Winger, Alice Cooper) on guitar, Brian Tichy (Ozzy, Billy Idol, Foreigner) on drums and Michael Devin (Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Lynch Mob) on bass, and as with all WHITESNAKE’s albums, Coverdale aided so capably by Aldrich opens up his heart and soul to express emotions and empathy rarely heard these days in any musical genre.
More than simply their latest release, “Forevermore” represents WHITESNAKE’s no holds barred, most heartfelt, melodic and musically muscular excursion for many a year.
The album’s release will be anticipated by the digital only release of the first single/video clip “Love Will Set You Free” on February 21st.
“Forevermore” will be specially released on a “Snake Pack” edition for the first 3 weeks in England only. This very special release – arranged in conjunction with Future Publishing and Classic Rock magazine – will come with a collector’s edition 132 pages deluxe magazine + A1 poster & metal pin badge and shall feature an exclusive cover art and 2 bonus live tracks “Slide It In” and “Cheap An’ Nasty” which will serve as an appetizer for the forthcoming “Live @ Donington 1990” to be released in the summer 2011.
The album is also being released on a double gatefold vinyl format, with deluxe special editions to be announced shortly.

The much heralded return of British metal legends Judas Priest with the band’s "US 2009 Summer Tour" was met with remarkable success at the massive AT&T Center on Saturday July 25th in San Antonio, Texas. The weeks leading up to the concert saw local radio station KLBJ FM ask their listener’s "Some pretty big shows are coming up. Who are you most excited to see?" in the form of a poll on the popular classic rock formatted radio station’s website. Judas Priest claimed victory peaking with ninety five percent of the vote beating out the likes of Metallica, AC/DC, Paul McCartney, Journey and the Black Crowes. It was more than clear that Texans were ready for some Priest!
The now legendary guitarist, John Sykes, first rose to public consciousness after joining the New Wave of British Heavy Metal band, TYGERS OF PAN TANG, for two albums; SPELLBOUND and CRAZY NIGHTS. He was then recruited into THIN LIZZY by the mastermind Phil Lynott himself. After one more album, the classic THUNDER AND LIGHTNING, as well as a double live LP entitled LIFE in 1983, THIN LIZZY was disbanded. Soon after John found himself working alongside Jon Lord, Cozy Powell, Neil Murray and David Coverdale in WHITESNAKE, in time to make an appearance on the 1984 SLIDE IT IN record. The biggest success was yet to come and took shape in the 1987 self-titled album, which went on to sell millions. Having been fired from WHITESNAKE (along with everybody else), John started his own band, BLUE MURDER, releasing two albums, the self-titled in 1989 and NOTHIN’ BUT TROUBLE in 1993. In 1994 John, Scott Gorham and Brian Downey decided to resurrect THIN LIZZY for some select shows, in honor of their departed leader. Since then, in between doing solo albums and tours, Sykes has, along with Scott Gorham, kept their version of THIN LIZZY going to the present day with the lineup presently being completed by drummer Tommy Aldridge and bass player Francesco DiCosmo. In this interview John Sykes shares some insights on the various stages of his illustrious career.
Joe Lynn Turner’s recording career, spanning three full decades, is too impressive to be described in just a few sentences. He will, however, forever be first and foremost recognized as the man responsible for leading the legendary hard rock band Rainbow to it’s greatest commercial heights. Taking over the reigns from Graham Bonnet, who had only endured one album in the giant shoes left by Ronnie James Dio, Joe recorded three classic albums, DIFFICULT TO CURE in 1981, STRAIGHT BETWEEN THE EYES in 1982 and BENT OUT OF SHAPE in 1983. Before reuniting with Mr. Blackmore once again, this time at the helm of Deep Purple to record the SLAVES AND MASTERS album in 1989, Joe helped Yngwie Malmsteen craft his arguably best work to date, the ODYSSEY in 1988.Through the years Joe Lynn Turner has also released numerous well received solo albums and worked with many great bands such as Mother’s Army. In the past decade he has, among other things, worked with Nikolo Kotzev on five albums, Brazen Abbot’s EYE OF STORM in 1996, BAD RELIGION in 1997, GUILTY AS SIN in 2003 and MY RESURRECTION in 2005 as well as Nikolo Kotzev’s double album NOSTRADAMUS in 2001. He’s also released and toured several albums with fellow Deep Purple alumni Glenn Hughes. We hope that you enjoy this look into Joe’s career, past, present and future!
