Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot, ex-W.A.S.P

October 10th, 2007

FRANKIE BANALI

Frankie Banali is a legendary drummer who is best known for his work with Quiet Riot and W.A.S.P. Frankie joined Quiet Riot in 1983 prior to the band releasing their smash album METAL HEALTH. The album stormed up the U.S. charts; it even reached the number one spot and went platinum five times over in the process. It is worth a mention that Quiet Riot were the first heavy metal band to top the U.S charts. Unfortunately thier following albums CONDITION CRITICAL and QRIII didn’t reach the success of METAL HEALTH.  With the lack of success and several line -up changes the band slowly disbanded in 1988. Frankie started to work with W.A.S.P. HEADLESS CHILDREN was released in late 1988 and it was a big success. Frankie did a world tour with W.A.S.P and later on he worked on numerous W.A.S.P albums including CRIMSON IDOL which was another milestone in W.A.S.P’s career. Quiet Riot was reformed in 1993 and after several discussions Frankie decided to rejoin his old mates. Since re -joining Frankie has been the driving force behind Quiet Riot. The band released their latest album "Rehab" in 2006 and now in 2007 they finally arrived here in Scandinavia, for the very first time in their career. At the Swedenrock festival I managed to sit down with Frankie himself to talk about the long history of Quiet Riot, his involvements with W.A.S.P, his work with Glenn Hughes and various other interesting topics…

RANDY PIPER’S ANIMAL

INTERVIEW AND PICTURES BY MARKO SYRJALA

TRANSCRIPTION BY NEIL BATTY

Guitarist Randy Piper is an American musician who made his name in W.A.S.P in the early 80’s. The band’s debut single, entitled “Animal (Fuck like a Beast)”, was released in 1983 and it was an instant success. A self titled debut album came out one year later and it included such classics as “I Wanna Be Somebody”, “L.O.V.E Machine” and “Sleeping in the Fire”. THE LAST COMMAND was released in 1985 and it another successful album with the help of such gems as “Wild Child” and “Blind in Texas“.  After the Last Command -tour Randy quit the band and then he briefly worked with Alice Cooper before he started his own band Animal. Although Animal has been around more than twenty years it wasn’t until 2002 that band released its first studio album titled 900lbs STEAM. There have been numerous line -up changes in the bands history, at one point former W.A.S.P colleagues Chris Holmes and Tony Richards were members, but Randy and singer Rich Lewis are still remaining from the very first Animal line up. The band’s second album VIOLENT NEW BREED was released in 2006.  The album was produced by Swedish guitarist/producer Chris Laney who was also joined in the bands ranks. Today there are actually three Swedish guys in  Animal; Chris on guitar, Grizzy on bass and J.Koleberg on drums. The new line up of animal did a brief tour in Europe last May/June and I was honored to talk with the guys after their brilliant show in the backstage of the Swedenrock festival. Here they are: Randy, Rich and Chris from ANIMAL!!!

WASP Live in FINLAND

October 11th, 2006

24.9 2006

Live at House of Culture, Helsinki FINLAND

Blackie Lawless formed WASP in the early eighties together with Randy Piper, Chris Holmes and Tony Richards. The band’s first EP “Animal “F*** Like A Beast” was released in 1983 and it was an instant success world wide. The band established a reputation as a ferocious live act, thanks to having naked beauties in a torture rack on stage and throwing raw meat into the audience during the show. The self titled debut album included such classics as “I Wanna Be Somebody”, “L.O.V.E Machine”, “Sleeping In The Fire” and “Hellion” which all are true heavy metal classics. In the following years the band released the albums “The Last Command”, “Inside The Electric Circus” and “Headless Children” before they went on hiatus around 1990. “The Crimson Idol” was released in 1993 with Blackie being the only original member. 1997 saw the release of “K.F.D” and a brief re-union with Chris Holmes. Since then WASP has released two live albums, five studio albums and has been almost constantly on tour. Although their record sales are far from the glory days, people still are interested to see them play live.Tonight’s show at House of Culture was sold out with the sales of 1500 tickets and on the current tour the band sold altogether almost 6000 tickets in Finland.

SWEDENROCK

The 8th – 10th of June 2006

Solvesborg Sweden

by Arto Lehtinen and Marko  Syrjala

Wow! This is the sixth time that the Finnish Metal-Rules squad makes an invasion to the mighty Swedenrock festival. Over 60 bands descended on the the southern area of Sweden for a festival that turned out to be nothing but an utter blast! The bill of Swedenrock festival 2006 covers a wide range of metal styles and even classic rock stuff (Journey and Molly Hatchet). Therefore, there was at least something for everyone who attended the festival. As usual, the whole festival was once again sold out when around 20,000 people arrived at the area every day. The Swedenrock festival has always had tremendous luck with the weather as once again the gods of weather blessed this rocking metallic heaven on the earth with an extreme hot and sunny weekend that burned red the skin of several festival goers.

As stated in the first sentence, this is the sixth time that the Swedenrock festival has been featured in the site of Metal-Rules.com, so it is quite logical for us to give a real in-depth article of several bands performing at Swedenrock. Enjoy !!!
