Over the years I have spent (wasted?) lots of time looking at album covers and comparing bands that I enjoy.   I noticed a distinct pattern of W.A.S.P doing something and then later Slayer doing something extremely similar. Coincidence or rip-off? Let’s examine the evidence. Enjoy this feature.  PS. Please read my disclaimer below…

SWEDENROCK 2014 – Solvesborg Sweden

July 19th, 2014

Article and pictures by Arto Lehtinen,
Marko Syrjala, and Patrick Clement

Hell yeah! It’s time to enter the mighty Swedenrock Festival. A fantastic and the most enjoyable rock and metal festival on earth. It has to be pointed out that Metal Rules has covered Sweden Rock since 2001! Therefore, it is quite logical to cover the festival again. The 2014 line up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock. Approximately 80 metal and rock bands offered one hell of an experience for attendees. Sweden Rock has been successful during the past decade as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t an exception as the fest was sold out despite a lousy economic situation worldwide. It has become quite logical for us to give an in depth article on several bands performing at Sweden Rock to all the readers out there. The weather was both rainy and sunny during these four days. The team was there to witness the bands, not for some kinda beach party crap. Unfortunately, we are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Rock on!

WASP: Live at the Circus, Helsinki

October 26th, 2012

17’TH OCTOBER 2012

American heavy metal band, W.A.S.P., has been annual visitors in Finland during the last decade and this year was no exception. Since there’s no new album to promote, this tour was built upon the bands 30’TH Anniversary. The ads said that this tour is going to be the biggest spectacle W.A.S.P. has ever created and the message was well received since all four shows in Finland were practically sold out a long time ago. About 1500 eager people arrived to The Circus and they were ready witness the spectacle.

L.A. GUNS – drummer Steve Riley (ex- W.A.S.P, Keel)

November 24th, 2011

L.A. Guns are best known as being one of the veterans of the Sunset Strip’s hair metal scene. The band formed in 1983 by guitarist Tracii Guns and after several line-up changes they found the right members and the classic line-up then consisted of Guns, vocalist Phil Lewis, drummer Steve Riley, bassist Kelly Nickels and guitarist Mick Cripps. Their late 80’s/early 90’s albums COCKED AND LOADED and HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES were highly successful. The 90’s proved to be a difficult time for L.A. Guns, as it was for many metal and hard rock bands. A great number of line-up changes and unsuccessful albums followed but the band finally got back on track with the 2001 album MAN ON THE MOON which once again included Guns, Riley, Cripps and Lewis back together. The next album WAKING THE DEAD followed in 2002 but although that album had many great reviews, and the band had some good tour offers, Tracii Guns decided to quit and concentrate on his brand new project Brides of Destruction which also included Nikki Sixx from Mötley Crue. The band lost their record deal and already booked tour but decided to carry on with a new guitar player. Stacey Blades (ex-Roxx Gang) stepped in and the album TALES FROM THE STRIP was released in 2005 and since then the band has been actively touring across the globe. The current version of L.A Guns includes: Lewis, Riley, Blades and the latest addition bassist Scotty Griffin.  The band arrived to Stockholm on late October and then we had an honor to sit down with Mr. Riley and hear the latest news and other interesting stuff as well… Read on!

Transcription assistance by EvilG

Where Angels Suffer (WAS) is a new band featuring former W.A.S.P. members drummer Stet Howland and guitarist Chris Holmes. The band is completed by vocalist Rich Lewis (Animal), and bassist Steve Unger (Metal Church). The original line-up also included another former W.A.S.P. member Randy Piper but he split with the group earlier this year and he’s now been replaced by Ira Black (Lizzy Borden, Metal Church) The band was formed in 2010 and they released the debut album PURGATORY in the spring of 2011. Where Angels Suffer did their first ever European tour on last August and in Sweden we had the pleasure to sit down with Howland and Lewis and learn more about the band and its future plans as well as some old stuff… Read on!

According to a press release, Where Angels Suffer will embrace their metal history while simultaneously astounding their fans with groundbreaking original songs that could only be created by the exceptional chemistry and passion these professional musicians discovered when they came together again.

Piper, an original member of W.A.S.P. along with Chris Holmes and Blackie Lawless, helped create the sound that took the band’s first two records to gold status. “I play from the heart!” Randy says.

Randy’s credit to heavy metal can not be summed up very easily as he is continually embarking on creative pursuits and is still very much a part of the metal scene. “You can’t go back, but you can definitely move ahead,” he says.

Holmes has etched out a stellar career which can be traced back to the early days of the metal scene that infiltrated L.A. and the Sunset Strip. A California native himself, Holmes is also well known for his role in The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years and other projects, both in film and music, having played with the “A” list of metal musicians.

Piper and Holmes, who were an essential part of W.A.S.P., have stayed in close contact and feel now is the perfect time to launch the much-anticipated project fans have been waiting for.

Longtime drummer of W.A.S.P., Howland was featured on ten albums (studio and live) and has toured with all the top metal acts, including BLACK SABBATH, a personal highlight during his W.A.S.P. years. Aside from W.A.S.P., the ever-active Howland’s resume includes TEMPLE OF BRUTALITY, RUN 21, KILLING MACHINE, BELLADONNA, BLACKFOOT and LITA FORD, just to name a few. Howland resides in Florida, where he has a recording studio to keep him busy on a variety of projects, including his newest one, a reality show that will be filmed at his home and studio.

“We’re going out and were rocking,” says Howland, who sees Where Angels Suffer as an opportunity to bring some great musicians together and make some “real music.”

Steve Unger, who played with Metal Church, is a talented bassist in his own right: his contribution to Where Angels Suffer completes the dynamic of the band. Grateful for the opportunity to play on the project, he and the other band members have a mutual respect for one another because of the unbelievable talent of each artist involved.

Unger, who comes from Seattle, Washington, has had a long career with Metal Church and has been a key contributor to their success over the years. He believes this album will be one of the best culminations of talent the metal scene has seen in a long time. Unger commented that the music is so relevant today because it is “a high-bred cross-breed between old and new.”

Lewis, a longtime friend and fellow musician of Piper and Holmes, was a natural choice for Where Angels Suffer frontman and has become a key component to this venture. He has played alongside many greats artists, including his current bandmates, some of whom where in ANIMAL. He has been compared to greats like Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickinson and Lawless, but his signature style has blended with the dynamic sound of his bandmates that sets this album apart from the rest.

Where Angels Suffer is a unification of style, brought together by each band member’s tenacious effort and dedication to bring the fans the music they love. Whether it was the alignment of the planets or simply the right timing, the production of the album and the formation of the band came together seamlessly.

An Amazon pre-order is also available.

TUSKA OPEN AIR 2010 Festival

September 6th, 2010

Tuska 2010-Logo_20-02-2010(WM).jpg

Kaisaniemi Park

Helsinki, FINLAND

As everyone who was there still recalls, last year’s Tuska wasn’t a highlight experience when it comes to bands. This was surprising as there were some killer names on the bill such as Suicidal Tendencies, Pestilence, My Dying Bride. Obviously, last year was some kind of intermission for booking bands to pull more people. Thankfully, this year’s Tuska event was completely different. The line-up definitely looked more than awesome. The legendary Megadeth headlined Sunday, Nevermore on Saturday and above all the Canadian guitarist, wizard, and music genius, Devin Townsend. Japanese j-rock groups were not seen at Tuska. Instead the death metal bands ruled such as Obituary, Nile and of course domestic bands such as Sotajumala ja Torture Killer. The festival was an utter success. The whole weekend was totally packed….and above all Megadeth crowned the whole three day metal inferno.

Sad but true, Tuska will not be held in the heart of Helsinki in the upcoming years. The park of Kaisaniemi will be a construction zone as the whole area will be improved to be better and more enjoyable. However, it is going to be interesting to see how the new area will work for metal bands. At least the upcoming area has proven itself to be a good festival area as there have been a couple of festivals and gigs arranged there so far. This is a farewell to the Kaisaniemi park and the current Tuska formation.

Enjoy the review and above all enjoy our pics.

Jävlä Swedenrock, här kommer vi igen. The annual roadtrip to Swedenrock by the Finnish Metal‑Rules.Com  team is already the tenth time in a row.  The  2010 line‑up presented a wide range of metal and hard rock. Therefore, over 70 bands offered nothing but an utter blast and a helluv an experience for the attendees to enjoy metal and rock. Swedenrock has been successful during the past ten years as the festival has always been sold out. This year wasn’t any exception as the fest was sold out despite the lousy economomic situation worldwide. As mentioned in the first sentence, this is the tenth time in a row when Sweden Rock has been featured on Metal‑, so it is quite logical for us to give a real in‑depth article of several bands performing at Sweden Rock. The  weather wasn’t ideal compared to previous years. It either rained or was windy with a little sunshine. But we were there for bands, not for having some beach party. We are not able to cover every bloody band, but hopefully you will have a pleasant reading experience… Enjoy or die !!!

W.A.S.P -Blackie Lawless

November 22nd, 2009

Legendary U.S band W.A.S.P. would stir up quite a bit of controversy in their mid 80’s heyday thanks to their explicit lyrics and over-the-top stage show, which many deemed violent and sexist. That controversy would fade in time as the band tamed a bit and many more controversial acts came long, but not before putting the band on the map of the rock world and creating a ton of free publicity. The band released its self titled classic debut in 1984, and wouldn’t stop or even slow down despite some highly disruptive lineup changes and slowly fading album sales. The band has been relentless in their album releases, almost never letting up or even taking a bit of a breather. Their latest effort, 14’th studio album, BABYLON, arrived stores just a couple of months ago. Although this band has faced many ups and downs in its long career they now seem to do extremely well especially here in Scandinavia. In Finland alone, band now sold out four shows and performed altogether in a front of over 6000 WASP maniacs, that’s not so bad on these days isn’t it? In Helsinki we had a chance to sit down with the bands founder and mastermind Blackie Lawless and discuss many current topics including: the new album BABYLON, The Crimson Idol Anniversary –tour, the past, the future, the current global situation, politics and Blackies’ thoughts about retiring… Read on and learn!!

Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot, ex-W.A.S.P

October 10th, 2007

Frankie Banali is a legendary drummer who is best known for his work with Quiet Riot and W.A.S.P. Frankie joined Quiet Riot in 1983 prior to the band releasing their smash album METAL HEALTH. The album stormed up the U.S. charts; it even reached the number one spot and went platinum five times over in the process. It is worth a mention that Quiet Riot were the first heavy metal band to top the U.S charts. Unfortunately thier following albums CONDITION CRITICAL and QRIII didn’t reach the success of METAL HEALTH.  With the lack of success and several line -up changes the band slowly disbanded in 1988. Frankie started to work with W.A.S.P. HEADLESS CHILDREN was released in late 1988 and it was a big success. Frankie did a world tour with W.A.S.P and later on he worked on numerous W.A.S.P albums including CRIMSON IDOL which was another milestone in W.A.S.P’s career. Quiet Riot was reformed in 1993 and after several discussions Frankie decided to rejoin his old mates. Since re -joining Frankie has been the driving force behind Quiet Riot. The band released their latest album "Rehab" in 2006 and now in 2007 they finally arrived here in Scandinavia, for the very first time in their career. At the Swedenrock festival I managed to sit down with Frankie himself to talk about the long history of Quiet Riot, his involvements with W.A.S.P, his work with Glenn Hughes and various other interesting topics…

RANDY PIPER of Animal, ex-W.A.S.P.

August 21st, 2007
Randy Piper

Guitarist Randy Piper is an American musician who made his name in W.A.S.P in the early 80’s. The band’s debut single, entitled “Animal (Fuck like a Beast)”, was released in 1983 and it was an instant success. A self titled debut album came out one year later and it included such classics as “I Wanna Be Somebody”, “L.O.V.E Machine” and “Sleeping in the Fire”. THE LAST COMMAND was released in 1985 and it another successful album with the help of such gems as “Wild Child” and “Blind in Texas“.  After the Last Command -tour Randy quit the band and then he briefly worked with Alice Cooper before he started his own band Animal. Although Animal has been around more than twenty years it wasn’t until 2002 that band released its first studio album titled 900lbs STEAM. There have been numerous line -up changes in the bands history, at one point former W.A.S.P colleagues Chris Holmes and Tony Richards were members, but Randy and singer Rich Lewis are still remaining from the very first Animal line up. The band’s second album VIOLENT NEW BREED was released in 2006.  The album was produced by Swedish guitarist/producer Chris Laney who was also joined in the bands ranks. Today there are actually three Swedish guys in  Animal; Chris on guitar, Grizzy on bass and J.Koleberg on drums. The new line up of animal did a brief tour in Europe last May/June and I was honored to talk with the guys after their brilliant show in the backstage of the Swedenrock festival. Here they are: Randy, Rich and Chris from ANIMAL!!!
