SANCTUARY Tribute Upcoming Shows as Farewell to Warrel Dane; Announce Guest Vocalist Joseph Michael (Witherfalll)

Following the unfortunate loss of one of metal’s most revered vocalists, WARREL DANE (Sanctuary, Nevermore), prior to SANCTUARY’s upcoming dates supporting Iced Earth across North America, the band has announced the tour will go forth as planned. The shows will act as a farewell tour in tribute to the life and memory of DANE with guest vocals for SANCTUARY to be performed by Joseph Michael (Witherfall).

SANCTUARY guitarist Lenny Rutledge comments:
“Sanctuary has decided to continue on with the Iced Earth tour to pay tribute to our brother Warrel Dane. We have enlisted the help of our friend Joseph Michael from Witherfall. The set will consist of many old and some newer songs performed with the utmost respect and quality to honor our friend. Please join us in this farewell as we celebrate Warrel’s musical legacy with Sanctuary. We look forward to sharing this tribute with all of you.”

SANCTUARY recently released the official prequel to 1988’s classic debut “Refuge Denied”, “Inception”, which showcased several previously lost recordings from their 1986 studio session that have now been restored, remixed and remastered by Chris “Zeus” Harris (Queensryche).

Formed in 1985, the band were signed to Epic Records with the help of Megadeth guitarist Dave Mustaine and released two records, “Refuge Denied” (1988) and “Into The Mirror Black” (1989) which saw them perform with the likes of Megadeth, Fates Warning, Warlock and Death Angel. The band disbanded in 1992 as members Warrel Dane (vocals) and Jim Sheppard (bass) went on to form the highly successful metal act Nevermore with acclaimed guitarist Jeff Loomis. SANCTUARY reunited nearly 25 years later in 2010 and appeared at several festivals worldwide before returning to the studio to record their acclaimed full-length comeback album “The Year The Sun Died” for Century Media Records in 2014.

Warrel Dane tragically passed away on December 13, 2017 due to a heart attack while recording his second solo album in São Paulo, Brazil.

Warrel Dane dies of a heart attack aged 56

December 13th, 2017

Warrel Dane, the legendary vocalist of Sanctuary and Nevermore, has passed away at 48, having suffered a heart attack Wednesay (December 13th) in São Paulo, Brazil. Dane was in Brazil working on his second solo album, Shadow Work.

According to Brazil’s UOL, Dane’s guitarist, Johnny Moraes, says he was with Warrel when he began to feel bad around midnight.

“He tonight had a heart attack. It was in the flat where he stayed for the recording of the record, when it happened. I got to do cardiac massage, we called the SAMU (Mobile Emergency Care Service), who arrived very fast, but when they arrived, he had already died,” said Johnny.

According to the guitarist, Dane already suffered from health problems. “His health was already very weak because of diabetes and his problems with alcoholism. He was already facing many health problems.”

The report reveals that Warrel Dane had a long-standing relationship with the Brazilians, not only because of the shows. Since 2014 he has been recruiting Brazilian musicians to do some solo touring. Since Nevermore dissolved, he went on to do two European tours with the Brazilian musicians and then decided to record the new album with them.

Dane released his first solo album, Praises To The War Machine, in 2008. Now, he was already in the advanced stages of the recordings for his new album

“The record had almost all the instruments completed and we started to record the voice. Much of it was done,” said Johnny. The musicians are already thinking about how to use the material for a posthumous tribute. “Maybe we can count on guests. But there’s nothing official about it.”

Warrel Dane – Nevermore Vocalist

Warrel Dane of Nevermore

Interview, live + interview pictures by Luxi Lahtinen & Kapa Kilgast

Transcription by Wyatt Marshall

Nevermore?s latest studio album, THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOR, has been gaining rave reviews from critics all around the world so it shouldn?t come as a surprise to anyone that they are considered  one of the biggest and most important bands for their own label, Century Media Records nowadays. The band?s journey through the years has been victorious for them since the day Nevermore was started from the remains of another short-lived, but successful group, Sanctuary.

Nevermore?s journey continued victoriously to Finland where the band played a special headline show at the Tavastia Club, Helsinki on 8th of September 2006, right before their tour with Disturbed and the DVD recording show in Bochum, Germany (which was unfortunately cancelled due to an infection of the band?s vocalist, Darrel Wane).

We met Warrel at the Restaurant Ilves in the downtown of Helsinki just a few hours before their first ever show in Finland, and had 20 minutes on our hands to inquire briefly from Warrel about the ongoing tour in general, the Sanctuary years, his solo project together with Peter Wichers (ex-Soilwork) – amongst other things, too…

Nevermore Guitarist Jeff Loomis

Jeff Loomis of Nevermore

As any attentive reader has noticed, Nevermore are one of the band’s I worship. In fact, they are easily one of the better bands to emerge in the past 10 years. I’m not quite sure how the band manages to keep advancing things and how guitarist Jeff Loomis manages to out-shred himself with each album. On the new album, THIS GODLESS ENDEAVOUR, Jeff is joined by second guitarist Steve Smyth which only ups the ante. That is one topic we cover in the interview, along with some guitar geek stuff, the ever important “Maiden or Priest?” question, and of course stuff about the band’s new album….so let’s start there…..
